panic attacks. happens to me at 2, 3 oclock often and it's terrifying. he has all the symptoms.
he needs to work at eliminating the stress in his life and try to unwind before he goes to sleep. i find i have less nightly panic attacks if i write down all my worries before i go to sleep. it should pass once the stress goes out of his life.

It could be something i had once.
It was sleep paralysis.
I woke up but i my body didnt wake up, i couldnt breathe, it felt like someone was pushing on my chest and i thought i was going to die. Literally, going to die. I thought im awake but i have no possible way to breathe anymore.
It was a scarey time and seein as i was locked in my student flat, i only wished that someone could come wake me up.
It may honestly be that, i have had it only once and it took me about 18 months to find out what the hell that was.

Persuade him to see a G.P A.S.A.P and get it sorted, in the mean time if he has a dry throat tell him to drink a glass of water before settling at night

Sounds like a panic/anxiety attack. My mum gets them also in the middle of the night.

Its sleep apnea. Your and my opinion doesn't count. He should get advise from doc if it happens frequently because it can cause heart failure if undetected.

It does not sound good. It may on the other hand be nothing to worry about.
Go to doctor. It may be a warning to see him especially since it occurred twice.

He should go and see his GP as soon as possible, becasuse it might become even worse than it was before.
