ok, i would of saved some money if i had it at the family restaurant. but thats not happening cuz some people are being idiots. anyhow, now im having it at a friends beautiful home. but now i need to rent chairs, get all the food and alcohol myself. it's not that i dont want to spend money on the party i definately do..but i have never thrown one myself so i want to know the smart ways on doing so. cost effective. price club kinda thing? platter trays? alcohol? kegs or what?
then i'll need decorations. he's turning big 5-0.
someone said get kegs and 2 buk chuck wine from trader joes.and no hard booze. (i only drink hard booze so that would kinda suck) but then someone else suggested renting a margarita (sp) machine... which sounded good.
any ideas?

How about asking some of your guests who are close friends to help with food and drink in lieu of gifts? It doesn't need to be formal, but a couple of people bring a keg, a few bottles of their favorite wine, a few bottles of other things... And then of course everyone has a secret party-snack recipe.

Rent what you can and have appetizer platters made up along with a few salty things like chips or pretzels. If your group is big on beer then a keg would be in order but you will still need some red and white wines options. Buy the 1.5 ltr. bottles of Chardonnay and Merlot. You can get away with a basic bar of Vodka, Gin, Scotch with tonic and soda mixers and some vermouth for martinis. Again buy the large bottles.
Decorations are the easy part. OTH party stuff is a huge section of every party store. You can pick your plate and cup pattern and match all sorts of things to it as well as add any number of gag items to the mix.

You could do beer and wine, or even a martini bar if you want hard liquor. I know some price clubs will do platters for you and even get you a big cake. Depending on the size of the home, if you are limited for room to put tables and chairs, those 'bistro' style tables are neat. They are tall enough that people can stand and eat, and then you don't need chairs. Or, you can mix the two, but the Bistro tables are nice when you need to save space and you want to encourag 'mingling'.

Chairs? Tell people to bring them or stand...Kegs are always the cheap way to go....6 foot long subs, chips and dip and your golden...but if you like hard booze try this little concoction from my fraternity days...

1 can kool aid mix
1/2 gallon rum
1/2 gallon vodka
1 bottle triple sec
1 bottle gin
1 bottle everclear
2 bags ice
fill with water

mix in brand new cooler with spigot or trash barrel and enjoy!!! (add dry ice for that smoky effect or get AN ICE LUGE AND LET LOOSE!!!)

BTW- I know the crowd will be older but still get the keys from everyone...lol

i tell you what - why don't you go to evite.com. they have a whole calculation engine that lets you put in the number of guests and some specifics about the party (like formal/informal? appetizers, main dish & sides, desserts? alcohol being served? or just beer/wine? etc...) that will then tally up how much of everything you will need, as well as give you a schedule of things to do staring one month before and down to on hour before... once you have a budget figured out you can add or delete items from your evite "budget" and plan to get to the amount you are comfortable spending.

mostly, relax & have fun. it is a party, after all...

If you can't go to the *family* restaurant, that leaves the other kind.

Don't forget to hire a dancer for the pole.
