I am allergic to cats and particularly my daughter's exotic cat, Harvey. I get itchy and sneezing, runny sinuses and have harder time breathing in her trailer because of that cat as near as I can figure! One time I fell asleep on her couch and the cat jumped over my head and a hair was deposited in my eye, that swole it up and ached it until I spent a great deal of diligence removing that hair from my eye with lots of soap and water flushing. My daughter has been diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer, mestastisized to her lungs. She does not make any connection to the allergies of the cat. She can hardly breathe unless she uses lots of medications. She does get the sneezing
and choking over and over, but she is so numb to her predicament that she refuses to listen to me about the dangers of that cat in her trailer. I realize that not everyone is allergic to cats. Why would she choose to keep such an animal when she is having so much trouble breathing?

I sorry to hear your daughter is so unwell, and her pet cat makes you feel so ill. When you plan to visit her make sure you dose up on anti-histamines etc, this will hopefully dampen down your reaction to the cat.

However given the cancer has metastasized, to your daughters lungs mean she has compromised breathing, due to the disease. Which causes breathlessness, wheezing and coughing etc.

Her breathing difficulties may or may not be further impacted by her cat being in the house. If your so concerned about the cat making her breathing more difficult, then ask her treating doctor, if cat dander can cause further breathing difficulties, and be guided by what he says.

Animals have a tendency to calm people, especially when very ill. And depending on how long she has had the cat, can also mean, that it maybe more than just a cat, but a family member.

But the most important thing, is that she is comfortable, and happy, so if that means having her family and pets around then so be it.

Why would she choose to keep such an animal when she is having so much trouble breathing?

The most likely reason is that she gets comfort from the cat and is willing to put up with any possible side effects that the cat might cause.

Probably she likes to hold the cat and feel it's warmth and affection and she can talk to the cat and tell it all of the things that are going on in her life that are bothering her. The cat has become like the imaginary friend a little frightened child might make up to keep them company when they are scared.

That's my guess anyhow. Why don't you ask her your self? Maybe she just loves the cat and feels responsible for it and figures that she doesn't want to let the cat down because of her own infirmities.

leave your daughter alone about the cat, I agree that the cat is probably bringing some joy to her life. Get some STRONGER allergy medicine and stop being a whimp so you can spend as much time with your daughter while is in this life. Wouldn't you hate yourself if you did not visit your dying daughter because of her cat??!!

Well, I understand that we all love our family pets, however, there comes a time that you have to make a decision between the cat or your health. I'd choose my health. The cat wouldn't stick around if it was allergic to it's owner.

She needs the cat because she doesn't get the love and attention she needs from family who feel that when she is going through the hardest time in her life, all they can do is tell her what to do and treat her like she is not able to make decisions for herself.

Because she has bonded with the animal and cannot be apart from the animal. Just like a human has bonded with another human and cannot be apart as well. I think it also gives her a sense of comfort and something to turn to during this time.

It is called love...find something to replace that and the cat can go.
