Diabetes is hard on the kidneys.

So if you only have one to start with, the damage will accumulate quicker.

Good diabetes control will lessen the damage.

We all normally have two kidneys. It's nice to have that spare just in case something should happen to the one kidney.

When a person's blood sugar is out of control (consistently high) it damages the kidneys. So, after years of having bad control, the kidneys can get so damaged that they begin to fail. Then the person needs to go on dialysis. Also, diabetics are more prone to infections. One could get a kidney infection and the infection could damage the one kidney, then the diabetic would be left with none, and would have to go on dialysis.
