I never heard of that. But, I'd guess it's just a bell pepper, Since bell peppers are popular in Italian cooking.

I think it depends on the specific recipe: there are bell peppers, banana peppers, sweet peppers, cubanelles...
all of these peppers play an important & integral role in Italian cuisine!

They are usually longer and thinner than a regular green pepper. They are also quite mild and taste delicious when fried in olive oil.

I grew some and they are not hot and have few seeds. They soak in the flovors you use.
