The vintage tin kind, or the more modern cloth-like kind?

2007-08-30 13:02:12 · 8 answers · asked by mandieshaw13 3 in Environment Green Living

Noone N: even though paper bags are biodegradable and somewhat "renewable," they are not the best choice for the environment because the tons of trees being chopped down to make paper are by no means being planted back at such a high rate as they are being cut down. Plus, who wants to contribute to lanfill space?

btw, i AM using paper bags for lunch for the time being, but that is only until i find a good-quality, long-lasting lunchbag.

We use both vintage tins and cloth types here :)

Quite frankly, the newer kinds keep the food better insulated (especially on those 100 degree days) and are lighter to carry. The down side, is they tear easily, absorb odor, and can not be recycled.

The tin ones however, are more enviromentally friendly since they can be recycled. However, to keep food cool ~ you have to fill them with artificial ice and store food in thermoses, neither which can be recycled when they burst or break.

I'd say it's probably a wash :)

What's important is whether you are using a tin or a vinyl bag, bringing lunch from home is always a ecologically sound thing to do.

I believe the cloth-like kind is friendlier. But some of the vintage boxes are way cool and quite the collector item, aren't they?

Yellow metal. If you accidentalloy drop it in the Sound on the way tp work/school it's easier for the Coast Guard to spot and retreive before some hapless fish nor bird gets it cought in its gullet and dies.

Paper bags are hip. After lunch you can blow them up and pop them behind an unsuspecting lunchmate and make him snort milk out his nose. That's way cooler than a Scooby Doo lunchbox.

My daughter has used the same insulate-lined cloth-type lunchbag since kindergarten, she is now entering 5th grade. I toss it in the washer and everything, you can't go wrong!

I use a paper bag. It's biodegradable and made from renewable resources.

I am not sure. When I pack a lunch, I just use a paper bag then throw it away.
