Many of them can be built on as soon as they're filled in and covered. That doesn't make them safe. I'd suggest you Google "Love Canal". It was just such a landfill that had a subdivision built over it, before we had laws about toxic wastes. The case was a landmark, and led to the first serious reform of waste disposal laws and policies.

I can be built on as soon as it is covered over.

I would not want to live there because of settling, release of methane and other gases and other unfriendly substances that can be found in landfills.

I've seen housing developments built on landfills and most have problems with cracking foundations.

There's a toxic waste dump in New Haven, Indiana that Waste Management 'covered up' several years ago...and it's a 'lovely' green hillside. I wouldn't build anything on that site for centuries. One day it will leach, and all the poisons now quietly hidden underground will be released into the water and/or air, and people will get sick and/or die. -RKO- 08/30/07

They had plans on making ski slopes out of them but the snows almost disappeared They would make good water slide slopes . That would give the kids something to do.

Why would you want to. It takes years and years of rotting and settling, not mention the methane gas.
