Hepatitis B is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the liver.

The virus is spread through sex and blood contact. It is extremely durable and can survive in open, hostile environments for up to a week. it is also about 100 times more infectious than HIV. This means family members can pass it around through household contacts like sharing shaving razors or toothbrushes.

Many people get it through sex or by sharing drug needles (for insulin, heroin and even steroids!), which is why some folks like to blame Hep B-infected people for their own condition. But many more people get it during birth from their mothers, which is why you shouldn't blame someone for having Hep B.

A vaccine is available for Hep B. It's a series of three shots taken at prescribed intervals spanning 6 months total.

The virus is called Hepatitis B and there is no number. It is transmitted through blood, saliva, vaginal secretions, semen, and breast milk and across the plancental barrier.
