Multiple sizes would be good too. So, I have some for the fruits and vegitables and some for carrying everything and some for cold items, etc.

I have seen them mostly in canvas but other materials are ok as long as they will stand up to LOTS of use for many years.

If you have a sewing machine, or know anyone that might have one, like your neighbour lady or grandma, you could easily make bags yourself. It isn't hard at all. You might want to choose different fabrics for different groceries, like netting for fruits, canvas for milk, juice and most other items, and some type of cleanable (rinsable ) material for frozen goods and meats.

go to your local thrift, antique, walmart, fabric, etc. store and buy a fabric bag to carry all of your small grocery items in, and at the checkout line don't get any bags, and for the bigger items, bring some small low edge boxes to house the items in your car so the don't slide around.

You know, thrift stores are loaded with brand new (but donated) canvas promotion bags that can often be purchased for less than a dollar. This is where I buy mine :)
