He had rotator cuff surgery 5 weeks prior. His medication was increased 1 week prior to his death. He was taking APAP 5.0 500MG Hydrocodone. This was increased to APAP 7.5 500MG Hydrocodone. He also visited his family doctor one week prior to his death to check blood work. His liver enzymes were "mildly" elevated. He seemed fine when he went to bed that evening. The medical examiner's report came back with "liver failure due to alcohol" because there was alcohol in his system. Can this be accurate?

The hydrocodone has acetaminophen( tylenol) in it...when combined with alcohol can damage the liver...especially if he took more meds than prescribed...was he a heavy drinker? If so, then this is very possible and likely...if he was not a regular drinker...then something else may have been affecting his liver...usually if the liver enzymes are elevated something else is prescribed besides the hydrocodone...Check out the links below. Well...was he drinking? If he wasnt then I would contest the Autopsy. Drinking and taking tylenol together can cause some liver issues, however he apparently was healthy enough to have surgery, so I am not sure what the answer here is. Apparently his Liver Failed from something...was he taking too much of the Vicodin? Good Luck!

OH HOW HORRIBLE FOR YOU!! I am sorry this happened to you. I would question the autospy to. sometimes they just get in a hurry and don't want to take the time to really find out. rush job you know.

lmaybe some one can tell me differently but I didn't think liver failure can happen so quickly and kill you so quietly and quickly? I thought usually heart stoppage was the cause of most people dying in their sleep. maybe someone can explain how liver failure can happen so fast and kill you without stirring you at all?

My younger brother past away in his sleep and the first report said the same "liver failure due to alcohol" and he did not drink but was taking a cough medicine.
Requested a full autopsy and found the cause of death was Pneumonia not liver failure.
Request a full autopsy!

It certainly could but you can always get a second opinion if you suspect the cause of death is inaccurate.
