If you're going into federally designated wilderness area, you're required to have a permit and identify your point of entry and (I believe) location of first nights stay. other than that, you're on your own...

But a written itinerary for both yourself and someone "at home" is safe... Both with copies of the map you're using to travel with. That way when you don't come out when you say you are planning to return your loved ones can give real information to the search & rescue teams... Someother than, he started at this trail head and went that way...
