Summer Camping
Sleeping bag type: Rectangular; fiberfilled. Why? More comfortable. Heavier to carry. More inside room.
Winter Camping:
Sleeping bag type: Mummy; down filled. Why? More warmth.
Backpacking Trip:
Sleeping bag type: Mummy; down filled. Why? Warmer when needed; leave zipper open when warmer at night. Lighter carrying weight; better compressibility to save room in backpack.

Is that a question, or a command? Here are the facts: It's not about spring, summer, fall, or winter. It's about the temperature. Seasons are subjective (we all live different places). It's also about whether or not it's going to rain or snow. Yeah, down is really light and really warm. When it gets wet, it's neither. Synthetics are better in wet weather, but heavier than down, and less compressible. Backpacking bags need to be light and easily compressed. Ultra-light bags wear out fast. Buying a small bag to save some weight means you'll sleep like crap. Rectangle bags are for car camping. A good sleeping pad is worth every bit as much as a good sleeping bag. Washing any sleeping bag too often ruins it. Storing your sleeping bag (long term) stuffed ruins it. Airing your bag EVERY morning is good (especially on two week trips). I don't think anyone can reccomend what kind of sleeping bag you should take. It's up to you to decide where and what you'll be camping in, when, and for how long.

I use a down-filled mummy bag all year and if its too hot I lie on top of it or unzip it. In the winter I also bring a "Liner" sleeping bag (only zips halfway) that I then put the mummy bag inside of. Keeps you nice and warm and dry.

synthetic for all of em, i spent 4 weeks backpacking the yukon province with one and it worked great through rain, snow, and blistering heat. down sleeping bags can get wet and are almost impossible to dry out, and they are also heavier

If you are only going to get one... I would go with down. It is warm in the winter, you can open it up and keep it cooler in the spring and summer, and it is light for backpacking.
I have a down bag that keeps me WARM in the winter, and have been very happy in all conditions. It will be hot in warm weather, but you can easily figure out a way to open it up or just lay on top of it.. but it is hard to warm up in the winter if your bag isn't good enough.
