It sounds like strep throat to me. I had strep many times as a kid and it hurt so bad to swallow that I would almost cry. You need to check with your doctor; antibiotics like amoxicillin used to be required for 10 days but a lot of doctors feel 3 days is fine now because taking antibiotics too much can build up a resistance. You may need to take it for more than 3 days and you can't miss a dose or the effectiveness decreases.

If it is not strep it may be post-nasal drip, which can also make your throat and ears hurt (the fluid drains down your throat which irritates it). For that you need to take something to dry up your sinuses; a cough syrup with a nasal decongestant, I believe, will take care of post-nasal drip

Oh boy! Salt water gargles, and tea bags! It's like 1812 all over again. If you want to medicate yourself in the manner that had mankind at a 30 year life expectancy, go for it.

1- Did you take all the pills that came with your prescription, or did you stop taking them when your throat started to feel better? Patients are usually given an 8 to 10 day supply of antibiotics. That you mention feeling better after 2-3 days makes me suspicious. This is the #1 cause for repeated flare ups of any type of infection. You should also know that once you expose an organism to an antibiotic, the organism become resistant to it. That means new and more powerful antibiotics need to be used to treat the same infection.

2- Throat infections can easily cause inflammation of the Eustachian tubes (canals that lead from the ear to the throat). Untreated, this can lead to ear infections that can eventually cause permanent hearing loss. Inflammation is the medical term for swelling caused by an irritant (viral, microbial, etc). Any inflammation of the throat and Eustachian tubes will cause some constriction of the airway and make breathing more difficult. If your breathing is uncomfortable, you need to go to your local Emergency Dept.

Go back to your doctor and honestly tell him/her your symptoms, and how you took your last prescription. Don't lie if you didn't finish ALL of the first one you were given. When you get your next antibiotic, TAKE ALL THE PILLS EXACTLY AS PRESCRIBED, WITHOUT SKIPPING ANY DOSES, OR LEAVING ANY PILLS UNTAKEN.

Sounds like you had a relapse of your throat infection. Antibiotics are supposed to be taken for the full course prescribed..usually 7-10 days. If you stop prematurely, sometimes the infection returns even stronger. see the doctor again to see if that is the case. In the mean time gargle with warm salt water 4 times a day.

How's the sinuses? A lot of times that can be the problem. I was put on antibiotics for strep, and sinus infection a few times and as I was taking them I felt okay but as soon as I was done the symptoms were back. Then I got put on Allegra-D for allergies and it has made a world of difference. My sinus infections were caused by allergies and I tend to breath through my nose so it was hard to breath at night and trying to breath through my nose made a lot of the "stuff" drain down the back of my throat, making it sore. It's a big Domino effect. Talk to your doc about allergy meds and possibly Nasonex. And to make your throat feel better, try to gargle in some really strong tea....Like one cup of tea made with 4-5 tea bags.

Did they do a throat culture on you? Could be strep throat. You may need a good dose of penicillin. That will knock it out!
Be sure to tell your doctor if you are allergic to the medication, then they may give you a 5 day dose of antibiotics instead of the penicillin.

Make sure you take all the prescription you were given. Usually is for 7-10 days. If you have a virus, the anitbiotic will not do any good. Go to a different Dr. for another opinion. So, what was wrong anyway.

You may have a sinus infection or other problems with your sinuses. I have severe allergies and the drip from my sinuses irritates my throat and ears a lot. Try gargling warm salt water 2 or 3 times a day, it helps.

NO ONE and I mean NO ONE but a REAL DOCTOR can tell you what is wrong with you now----my ONLY advice would be to make an appointment and go see him or her.... you could have ANY NUMBER OF THINGS wrong including something as simple as- - - you just needed to take the antibiotics longer to fight the infection that obviously didn't go away... or it could be something more---we are not doctors here...so before you take any person's UNKNOWLEDGEABLE advice, GO TO YOUR DOCTOR!

Ok I see with the 2 thumbs down that someone thinks a person with NO education in medicine online is a better person at diagnosing illnesses then a DOCTOR....and all this time I thought people were looking for the BEST ANSWERS someone could give... No one BUT a doctor could give this best answer for your problem.

did you take the full course of antibiotics or did you stop after two or three days? if you stopped it may have returned.

did you have strep or did the doctor not check? maybe it's allergy, a viral cold, dry air, etc. these won't be cured with antibiotics

U are still sick and just need to give it time. The antibiotic u were given killed the viral but u will still be sick for awhile. If it gets too bad u will have to go back in.
