Chicken!
I'd get a couple of breasts and a can of alfredo sauce, some onion, potatoes, and a hint of rosemary.
Butter up an oven tray/pan, place the breasts in there, cut up the potatoes and onion and distribute around the chicken (you could also include green peppers), pour the alfredo sauce all over the food and if desired you could garnish with "french onions" Bake uncovered until chicken and potatoes are done. Serve and enjoy!
My girl loves it when I serve that, I still have not named that recipe and don't think I ever will!

I have that same dilema when I plan to serve a pasta salad.
And usually it's on a warm day where I don't want to cook and
heat up the kitchen at the dinner hour. What I did last week,
was I put in a couple cans of small salad shrimp and stirred
those in for the meat/protein. Then I also added some extra diced cucumber, chopped up tomatoes, green pepper and splashed it with some paprika, and some mayo before
blending. I'd used a packaged seasoning mix, that I'll never
use again. It was yukko to us.I'll use my own blend next time. You could add some diced up ham or turkey from the deli dept. Or cheese cubes, or any other cooked meat.
Buy a fresh loaf of French bread and have the bakery slice
it for you. Sometimes they even sell it slathered with butter
and garlic and sell it in a foil sack. So all you have to do is
lay it on your broiler pan and wait til the butter melts and is a
golden color. And then just put it into a basket or bowl lined with a paper towell or napkin and cover the bread with a cloth napkin for serving at the table.
Then make a light dessert with fruit and maybe flavored yogurt with a dollop of the low fat topping you can buy. You'd want something light after the heavier pasta and garlic bread.
I hope this works for you. We like it.

How about burgers diane or cube steak diane?
Cook the meat. Add some blackberry wine to the pan drippings, whisk it together, and reduce it until you have a nice sauce, which you pour atop the meat. The alcohol all evaporates, and you have a very nice blackberry sauce which really enhances an inexpensive meat and makes it very special.

You could use chicken either as a side, or shredded and stirred into the pasta salad. Canned Salmon or Tuna would do equally well

Steaks or chicken or pork chops are always good. Or the regular hamburgers or hotdogs. How about bratwurst or italian sausage with peppers and onions...either grilled or pan fryed!?! I think pasta salad goes with just about anything!

Something grilled. Pasta salad reminds me of summer. I would grill some chicken breasts.. marinate them in one of your favorite vinegarette dressings.
