Orange Habanero Pepper
Capsicum chinense

1-1.5" long, orange colored pepper. Extremely hot, the orange habanero is one of the spiciest peppers in the world. It is often used in making hot sauces. Be very careful when handling the seeds or inner parts of this pepper, the oil can be a serious irritant to the skin and eyes.

Origin: Capsicum chinense originates from Brazil and has been domesticated since 2000-1000 B.C. The orange habanero variety is believed to have originated in the Yucutan. It is grown commercially in some areas.

hope this helps you.

It all depends on the amount of capsaicin, the active ingredient, in peppers is in the pepper. Habañero peppers, on average, are the spiciest domestic peppers but some of the milder habañero peppers might be less spicy (but still REALLY spicy) than some Scotch Bonnets.

The spiciest so far found is the Naga Jolokia from India...but I wouldn't go biting into one to find out!

Capsaicin is interesting b/c it activates a channel in the body, TRPV1, that is classic in inflammational pain. If we can find a way to block these channels from getting activated, it could end up stopping pain in millions of patients each year.

The Guiness book of records lists the Naga Jolokia as the world's hottest. It comes from Assam, India and has well over a million Scoville units making it more than twice as hot as the Habanero. Incidently the Habanero and Scotch Bonnet are the same pepper by a different name.

No...not the habanero. While it is commonly called the hottest pepper, it is not. The hottest is the naga jolokia pepper. The heat in peppers is measured using 'scoville units'. Naga jolokia blows the others away. Of course, the habanero is very very hot but not the hottest!
