Think about breathing and your lungs. Your lungs are like a bunch of tree branches. When sitting up the air can come and go much easier with less work.
It it really that simple.

The positioning makes it easier for the breathing process in this person. Lying down pushes on his chest. Sitting up lessens that pressure-in his case. Someone else may be different.

Doesn't compress their lungs as much when sitting up. Lying down, gravity takes over and the lungs somewhat flatten. Harder to expand.

Its probably easyer to breath siting up and quicker to get help if needed.

To get proper lung expansion. They are still not getting it but they feel better. It is also the anxiety of smothering.

because you can breathe better and if you also have face in fan soemtimes they can breathe better also. or in paper bag when having attack it helps with out enhaler.

Because of the secretions that will close his/her airways so he/she sits to cough and get rid of them.
