I just started being a vegetarian, and have been for about a week. Could someone please tell me some faux meats that you can buy at a grocery store and cook at home? I started some Eating Right vegetarian breakfast links and ended up giving it to my dog. Please something tasty!!!

Thank you &hearts

I like Amy's Texas burgers (www.amys.com).

Gardenburger (www.gardenburger.com) makes a decent line of veggie burgers.

Yves (www.yvesveggie.com) makes a line of vegan items, including a rockin' taco mix.

Tofurkey (www.tofurkey.com) make deli slices and sausages.

Lightlife (www.lightlife.com) also makes analogues of all sorts. They also have several varieties of tempeh, which you can crumble into a pasta sauce or chili.

Most of these are available at natural food stores or stores like Whole Foods, but some conventional grocery stores might also carry them.

The best faux chicken I have had is by a company called Quorn. It comes in different styles: naked(like plain chicken breast), breaded, nuggets, in rice mixes, as well as others. It is found in the freezer section.
Boca is usually pretty good for the ground "beef", or you can also try Morningstar. Both of these companies have pretty good sausage and bacon. The Morningstar Grillerz are the best "hamburger" that I've had.
I have been a vegetarian for over 10 years now, so I really don't remember exactly what real meat tastes like, but my meat eating friends have told me that these were good too.
You can go to http://www.goveg.com to get some good vegetarian and vegan recipes. The site also has a vegetarian starter kit that you can order(for free).

I went through the same thing when I became a vegetarian. After a lot of trial and error I narrowed it down to the things that I think are pretty tasty. My favorite burgers are Morningstar Prime Grillers. Morningstar also has great faux bacon and sausage links and patties. For faux chicken patties, I love Boca Chick Patties. Boca also makes great Italian Sausage. Garden Burger BBQ Riblets are really fantastic. As for veggie hot dogs, the best brand I have tasted are Morning Star Hot Dogs.

I've yet to find a vegan veggie burger that tastes good, but back when I was just vegetarian, I REALLY liked Morningstar Farms' Gardenburger patties. Most of their products are good.
Boca's products are mostly vegan, and their faux chicken products are really good. Especially the spicy stuff. But don't even bother with the regular burgers. They taste like crap.
Yves lunch-meat substitutes are alright, but a little rubbery.
Tofurky's a realllly good brand for turkey substitutes. (They even sell whole Thanksgiving tofu-turkeys!) They're harder to find, but absolutely delicious.
Last but not least, EVERYTHING Lightlife makes is amazing. Their spicing is unmatched. Definitely try their products. They're a little pricey, but soo worth it!

Even if none of the above mentioned foods taste good right now, after a while you begin to forget what real meat tastes like, and after about a year you'll start to LOVE faux meat. (Sad but true. lol)

Hey congrats!
I love morningstar! Easy to buy, and make; it's cheaper if you can find it at Target or Walmart :).
Morningstar hotdogs taste just like real hotdogs, you have to keep them frozen but are great when you boil them. The hamburger patties are pretty good. I also really like the chick nuggets and buffalo wings. I think the only thing I really didn't care for was the fake bacon, but my roomie liked it. The little Boca lasagnas and pizzas etc are good but pretty expensive. The loose (fake) meat is pretty good for casseroles, though it can tend to get a bit flat or soggy.
The health sections of grocery stores are pretty good at carrying Morningstar, etc. Oh, some of that stuff can be grilled too, just long enough for it to be hot. Fake deli meats are pretty good too.

I love the MorningStar Farms Prime Grillers veggie burgers on a bun with Ranch dressing. Last night we tried Tofurky italian "sausage", and it was actually pretty good. We grilled it like regular sausage with onions and peppers and liked it. I also love the MorningStar Farms Buffalo "chicken" nuggets - I've been eating them for years, even before going vegetarian. Good luck, and dont' listen to the haters!

sorry i don't trust most "vegan" friendly soy based fake meat... why?

because most of it has dairy in it.

and MSG and a few other tricks that come from product of animal or just animal in it.

eat fresh fruits and veggies.. get some beans.. soy nuts.. nuts... potatoes... that's yr protein.

don't just be a vegetarian because you think you have to.. it's something deep inside.

i find the vegetarian diet is the best tasting.. i can't even 'wrap' my lips around processed foods any more...

experiment with all your vegetable and fruit selections out there.. it's quite a trip. there's so many out there you'll never run out of things to try and way to try it.

just remember once you leave the fresh produce section you have left the FOOD section at the grocer.

i kid you not.

you want vegan? get tofu without all the additives... you want a good soy milk? silk is about it...

watch out for chemicals that may appear to come from animals like CASEIN.... read the labels and jot things down if you so must and research them in google.com (or your fav. search engine) and find out what that stuff really is.

because though it may say veggie or vegan... you may find out you're really eating animal.

watch out for the huge scam on vegan cheeses... quite a few have dairy in them.

vegetarians don't eat dairy... sorry that's from an animal and mass production stuff always involves chemicals, hormones.. many things and ways to make the animals produce more than what is natural for them... it's not good... it's bad stuff.

that's why they claim greed is a sin... look what it does.

OH and watch out for those ORGANIC claims also... there's a real good likelyhood that it's not. (the scams are on.. a few companies got their rears kicked.. but it still happens)

They taste pretty good...and they've got em in chicken patty, sausage, and a couple other flavors too. Try 'em. they aint hard to find...most wal-marts have them

When I do eat them, it's usually a Boca Burger or Quorn tenders. I also sometimes use the Boca frozen crumbles in tacos, cottage pie and pasta sauce.
