Well my gran has just died and i suppose I'm coming to terms with it but it's my grandad I'm worried about. He's okay I suppose because well we could see it coming - she was in hospital most weeks. But any he's got diabetes and goes into a hypoglycemic coma about three times a year which is apparently quite a lot. When he went into one it was okay because my gran could phone 999 quite easily and so it was never fatal. But now she's gone who's going to phone? And because you can't actually tell you're going into one then emergency cords would be useless. So what I'm really trying to say is that there has got to be more than just my grandad witht his and how do they alert someone when it happens? otherwise he could die and I'm not going to let happen! And as we're living in Germany he won't live with us. He won't live with anyone come to it because he's too independent. So please help. Thankyou

HE DOES CONTROL HIS DIABETES! it's because he injects insulin that he goes into it - i think. It's not through any fault of his.

He should be checking his blood sugar frequently to make sure it isn't going too low. But that won't resolve the problem. Will he allow someone to move in with him like a friend who is maybe in a similar situation. Men are notorious for needing companionship when a spouse dies. Maybe women are too. If birds of a feather can flock together it can help alleviate problems for more than one. If not, maybe one of those new fangled almost hotel type places where you rent a room and they provide all of your meals, linens and have a nurse available. That would still maintain his independence and give him a social life as well.

Your grandpa needs to eat 3 low carb meals a day and healthy high protein snack between each meal and at bedtime to help keep his blood sugar more level. If he does this it will cut down on the number of Hypoglycemic episodes he has. Why not ask call and ask him if he being diligent about eating his 3 meals a day and his three snacks a day? Also consider buying some glucose tabs at the store and send them to him and ask him to keep them with him at all times just in case he feels an episode coming on. Tell him you love him and want him around for a long time so you want to be sure he takes care of his diabetes properly.

Well he either needs to face the light and move into an assisted living facility, or perhaps pay for a home nurse or home-care agency to come in and check on him a couple times a day.

The facts remain that if he does not care to control his diabetes someone will find him dead follow hypoglycemia.

the main reason he goes into this mess is because he won't check his blood and check it alot. every 4 hours around the clock and he wouldn't have low sugar. he could see it coming and fix that. he would just have to drink orange juice with 2 tsp of sugar and it would cure it. but he has to know to do this and when one gets older you tend to forget and stuff.

Your best bet is to find a personal in house care person that he will get along with and let that person stay with him. If the chemistry hits they will get along just fine.

Too much medication causes low blood/sugar. When he doesn't eat, he doesn't need much medication.
