this means that your respiratory system basically shut down.
your lungs either filled up with too much fluid and you "suffocated" . things such as pneumonia, copd (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder), and emphysema contribute to respiratory failure involving fluid filling the lungs.
or you might have had what is called a pulmonary embolism which is a large blood clot that blocks your pulmonary artery, preventing oxygenated blood from reaching your lungs and you stop breathing.
traumatic injury to your respiratory system organs can cause failure as well. things such as a crushed trachea, laceration of the windpipe (slashed throat), or crushed lungs are a few examples.
i work in trauma icu and unfortunately i see alot of patients that die from respiratory failure.
hope this helps

respiratory failure means they, for some reason, were unable to get air into their lungs. Throat damage, lung damage, a severe allergic reaction causing the throat or breathing passages to become restricted, etc. It can also mean when a person simply stops breathing. As far as symptoms... failure = not doing what it should and respiratory = breathing -- pretty self-explanatory there. Hope this helps.

It means you can't breathe, basically, because your lungs or windpipe or any other part of your respiratory system can't work anymore.
