is this something that will appear within a month or two, or years later after contact?

Genital warts can appear anywhere from months to several years after being infected with HPV. Some people will never develop genital warts from their HPV.

I have had HPV for 6+ years. I didn't develop genital warts from my HPV till about a year ago. It took 5 years for me to develop them! So, it can take a LONG time.

This is one reason why HPV is so common these days. Most people are unaware they have the virus because they don't show any signs or symptoms of it (like genital warts). They then end up spreading the virus unknowingly to other people.

"Typically, genital warts appear two to three months after exposure, though they can appear even years later".

I treat many, many patients with genital warts and have researched HPV extensively over the last two years. In my experience, both the males and females generally feel that they were exposed fairly recently before getting treated. If you're observant, you'll see them in two months. Hope this helps.
