I am quite certain your doc did like most docs do and patted you on your butt and said watch the sugars!! They are quite stupid that way, but then who ever said doctors were smart to begin with???

You need to go to the library or book store and find Atkins Diabetes Revolution and read and heed what it says.

Best thing to do for yourself is to get a notebook, stenographers is good choice. Journal everything from this day forward to the end of your life!!

I prepared a serving of a food and had it for snack time!! I test, eat the food, test 2 hours later. Journal the time, food, test results before eating and after.

This will tell you what you can and cannot eat!! Do not depend on the Am Diabetic Assn indoctrinated certified diabetes educators or dieticians to tell you what you might and then again might not be able to eat. They have no clue to your bod's ability to use foods. They will only tell you to continue to eat up to 11 servings of grains and grain products per day, and not to have any fats at all with it.

You should avoid at first anything that is white or tan!!

Do eat lots of beef, lamb, chicken, fish and green and red veges and dark colored berries. And don't forget to add in some good natural fats with your food plan or you will think you are going to starve !!

Take whatever medications the doctor recommends!! they help a lot.

I'm new also for the last two weeks. I read food labels now. For instance bread that is whole grain and 15 carbs, since I can have only two slices/day-----or not have bread and have some other starch instead. Also i now have a sweet potatoe insted of a white potatoe. Salads have no chesse, and I am using a mustard vinegarette. I now measure food out, like one cup of cheerios, 1cup of lowfat cottage cheese, 1cup of skim milk, 3oz of meat/three times a day. I like Fitday.com to figure my diet plan.( Kim52), its public and I keep a wt journal there also. Lastly I'm going to diabetic classes 9-13. Using my glucose meter really motivates me. Am before eating 90-130mg/dl and PM meter reading 2hrs.after supper 110-150mg/dl. I used to be 450 in the am. So other than immediately cutting out sweet foods and drinks, I'm low carb.

Hi: That question is a challenge to answer since type 1 and type 2 have different dietary choices, i.e. my son is type 1 and can eat anything (though he doesn't) since he covers his meals with insulin to keep his blood sugars in control, whereas it is my understanding that type 2s have to be on a strict diet based on the diet pyramid, though there are some type 2s that use insulin also. So, based on that..I hope that the sources below are of some help to you.

You should go see a dietician for more details. A diabetic can eat anything as long as it is in moderation. Anything with carbs in it should be limited but not eliminated. It is ok to have sweets once in a while as long as you work it into your diet plan.

lay off simple carbs, avoid refined sugars, white bread and pasta. Use cinnamon as a sweetener, not only is it sweet but it mimics insulin as well.

I'm sure your doctor gave you some guidelines.

Cut down on rice, pasta, bread, sugar, and sweetened soda.

If it tastes good....don't eat it. Sugar, starch, fat. Potatoes, pasta. and rice are all starch that your body converts into sugar. Also, only small amounts of fruit. You cant pig out on ANYTHING.
