He is a diabetic and I finally convinced him to go to the doctor because he could not turn his head it was so bad. The doctor gave him an antibiotic and he is taking this. How do I know when to take him to the hospital? He has not been running a high fever and he keeps putting heat back there. But his neck and back of his head is stiff and hard about the size of a golf ball! It is so scary to me. If he runs fever should I take him?It is hard getting him to the doctor! He does not want to go!

Do you mean "Staph infections"?
Staphylococci are gram-positive, aerobic organisms. Staphylococcus aureus is the most pathogenic; it typically causes skin infections and sometimes pneumonia, endocarditis, and osteomyelitis. It commonly leads to abscess formation. Some strains elaborate toxins that cause gastroenteritis, scalded skin syndrome, and toxic shock syndrome. Diagnosis is by Gram stain and culture. Treatment is usually with penicillinase-resistant β-lactams, but because antibiotic resistance is common, vancomycin may be required. Some strains are resistant to all but the newest ribosome-targeted antibiotics (eg, linezolid, quinupristin plus dalfopristin) or daptomycin (a lipopeptide antibiotic).
Since your husband is a diabetic patient, you should consult the doctor as early as possible when infection takes place.
Please see he web pages for more details on Staph infections.

If he has an abcess or even staph, I am very surprised it has not been opened and drained. I have had 3 of them on my stomach, and each time they were drained. I would either take him back or get another doctor if you aren't comfortable with what you were told. And tell your husband that staph is nothing to play with, you can die from the stuff!!!!!!

it must be lymphadenopathy if it is not painful and the antibiotic therapy is not effective and this swelling has the same size and doesn't regress an oncologist should see him because it may be a tumor(lymphoma)

Call his doctor and tell him just what you wrote here.
Ask him/her what to do.

Good luck
