It's estimated about 75 - 80% of the world has cold sores. So it's extrememly common. It's more common to have them, then to not have them!
Cold sores can be caused by either herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) or herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2). Most cold sores are caused by HSV1 though.
Genital herpes can also be caused by either HSV1 or HSV2, although it is more commonly caused by HSV2.
If herpes "crosses over" from the mouth to the genital area or vice versa it doesn't "change into another type", it simply justs spread the virus. For example, if a woman has cold sores caused by HSV1, and gives her husband oral sex, it could cause him to develop genital herpes which would be caused by HSV1.
This is why herpes is so common these days. A LOT of people have the virus and continue to spread it knowingly or unknowingly. Like I said before, 75 - 80% of the world has cold sores, while about 25% of the world has genital herpes.
Also, cold sores and genital herpes is just the beggining of the herpes simplex virus. Chickenpox, shingles, mono, and some other illnesses are all herpes! Chickenpox for example is HSV3.
Almost everyone has some kind of herpes virus in them, whether it's cold sores, genital herpes, or chickenpox when they were 5 years old.
Having herpes usually doesn't stop someone from having a healthy relationship though. I'm currently in a 2 year relationship and my fiance could care less that I have genital herpes. He knows the risks and concerns, but he loves me for me, virus and all. Some people are willing to take the risk of contracting cold sores or genital herpes to be with someone they care about. Although herpes outbreaks can be annoying and painful, at least herpes isn't deadly!

Both cold sores and genital herpes are caused by the herpes virus. Yes, there is type 1 and type 2, both we are learning more and more that there is not much difference between the two types. Both type 1 and type 2 can live in the genitals causing genital herpes.
Most people got oral cold sores through non-sexual means, often as children when adults are being affectionate with them. When you have an oral cold sore you should avoid kissing as you could give that person oral cold sores too. But, keep in mind that the majority of people already get oral cold sores so if they have ever gotten an oral cold sore before they already have it so kissing with your cold sore is a non-issue.
If you have an oral cold sore you should never give your partner oral sex when you have a cold sore present otherwise you will have a very high likelihood of giving your partner genital herpes--this is a very common way that people contract genital herpes.
Oral herpes, or cold sores, and genital herpes act similarly. The virus never goes away, you will have it for life. The virus is contained in the sores and can be easily spread when the sores come into contact with another person's mucous membrane (genitals, oral/lips/mouth area and eyes). When there are no sores the virus can still be passed but it is extremely low risk.
Keep in mind that the majority of people have oral herpes and 1 in 5 Americans, 20%, have genital herpes.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about six years ago, when I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video everything changed https://tr.im/herpesCures2o15VGJm
Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the man of my dreams. This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

I got diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about 5 years back, while I was still attending college and had a dumb one-night stand. I realize loads of young ladies will declare this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date men again. In the end, who wants to go out with a girl that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/e4bWO everything changed.
Not only was I able to eradicate all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a crowded cafe, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This program gave me back the chance to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the World.

Cold sores are only spreadable when you have an outbreak. You want to avoid kissing and oral sex when you have a sore so you have less risk of spreading it to your partner, this does not mean that you can never kiss anyone. You are right, there are two different simplexes of the virus. However, I think you are still supposed to avoid oral sex when you have an open sore because you can still pass the virus on to your partner. If you do pass on the virus he will not get herpes as in the std but will get the same virus simplex 1 that causes cold sores and may start getting cold sores himself. Hope this helps.

Ok, first things first.
There is HSV1. This is most commonly cold sores. But it can be transmitted to the genitals during oral sex (or touching a cold sore then touching the genitals.)
HSV2 is found more commonly genitally. But can be transmitted to the mouth (again in the same way)
When they go to another part of the body they stay the same, they do not change.
For example, I have HSV1 genitally, because my boyfriend performed oral sex on me with a cold sore.
Don't worry, cold sores and genital herpes is not the end of the world. Just watch if you get a coldsore to not kiss or perform oral sex until it has cleared.
Its true, once you have it. Its with you for life.
