Okay, I'm going to try to answer this without making it too lengthy.
First off... dump this jerk, not necessarily because he had herpes (it's possible he didn't know), but because it sounds like he cheated on you, if I'm interpreting your question correctly. Okay. Off my soapbox, on to your question...
Go to the doctor immediately. Ask to be tested for HSV. It will be a simple blood test. This will let you know for sure whether you have the virus. It's NOT certain that you do. If he never had outbreaks while you were together, it is possible, although unlikely, that you did not contract it. No reason to worry until you know for sure.
If you are positive for either strain, it's going to take some getting used to. As an earlier poster said though, it's not the end of the world. Just a speedbump in your sexuality. The important thing to remember is how you felt when you found out about possibly having H. Don't let anyone else experience that. If you do have it, please make sure you tell all possible suitors from this point on.
And don't worry. If the test is positive, things will be okay. And there are tons of us here for support. :)

Yes, not just possible, but probably. Unless he got it from this other lover (rather than gave it to them) and has not been with you since, it's likely you have it too now. People who are infected can have no symptoms of an active infection, and can unknowingly spread the infection to another person. People who are sexually active and suspect possible infection should properly use a latex condom during sexual activity, but even condoms will not completely eliminate the risk of spreading genital herpes while there are active lesions. The only surefire way to prevent getting and spreading genital herpes is abstinence. Herpes is a contagious infection that's caused by the herpes simplex virus. One type of the virus - herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) - can lead to cold sores around the mouth. An infection of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) can lead to genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease that causes blisters and pain in the genital area. Both types of the virus can be transmitted through direct contact. A person can get the cold sores of HSV1 by kissing or sharing eating utensils with an infected person. A person can get genital herpes or HSV2 by having intimate contact with an infected person. A mother who has genital herpes can pass the infection on to her newborn if she delivers the baby vaginally. In many cases, herpes doesn't cause any symptoms, so it's possible for a person to carry it and unknowingly pass it on to someone else. In other cases, herpes infections can lead to infections in other parts of the body. Sometimes people who have oral or genital herpes only have one outbreak. But other people have many outbreaks, which are less painful and shorter than the initial episode. For those who have reoccuring outbreaks after the first herpes infection, the virus can also lie dormant without causing any symptoms for some time. The virus tends to reactivate following some type of stress on the body, like a cold, an infection, hormone changes, menstrual periods, or even a tooth extraction.
There's no cure for herpes. In fact, once a person has been infected with the herpes virus, it's in the body forever.

Well, well, well: Go to your doctor fast. There is a control for this ugly disease and, you won't be bothered again but, get rid of this jerk, you'll be better off without him. You'll have to take a med forever, unless something down the line comes up and, I'm sure it will.
Don't, please, do this to anyone else, it could be a felony you know in some states. And, it's a dirty trick. My own daughter has it, In all the years she's had it, I have never seen an outbreak, she's lucky though. When she told her new boyfriend to be honest, he had it too. So, it proves that it's virulent and has been around.

Perhaps he did not use proper protection with that person. And you have. I do not think it is dormant for years type of thing, and you do not say, but if you haven't had any kinds of problems and it was years ago that he gave this to someone, and you were after the fact you are at much greater risk.

if it was dormant at the time(s) of intercourse it's possible you didn't contract it. if you do have it, then it's outbreaks can be treated with valtrex, etc. that way it's not so bad.
don't think of it as the end of the world, more of a speed bump in your sexuality. sorry in advance, just in case

well then if you suspect something then i suggest that you check it out with the doctors immediatly because it could be nothing but then again if he has herpes then he has probably given it to you and it is ok at first.. like nothing happens.. then it does.. so while it is in the early stages go and check it out!
