Standard Thai Mon Thong durians have sweet fruity-tasting meat with a firm texture and of yellow color. It's the variety that is the least likely to be outright disliked. It's also a bit boring for the taste buds.

Indonesian durians come in a wide range of flavors.

My own preferred variety has white, wrinkled meat with a texture like whipped cream and a bitter-sweet, nutty taste.

When the meat is not wrinkled upon opening of the fruit, the taste will be less creamy, and rather fruity.

You are less likely to find bitter-sweet durians with yellow meat, but occasionally you will come across that combination, too.

Yellow-meat durians are usually just sweet, not bitter-sweet. They also are less likely to have a nutty flavor.

TRUE STORY ABOUT DURIAN FRUIT My friend Val once told me a story involving the very odiferous durian fruit - known in Asia as "the King of Fruit" but durian fruit is banned in public places such as subways, malls and hotels. She and her family were visiting Malaysia a few years ago but had a stop over in Singapore. Her parents, who had moved to Canada about 30 years earlier, were chomping at the bit for durian. This was NOT permitted in the hotel but they went out and got one anyway from a local market. "They brought it back and it was like they were little kids again. Giggling and all a-twitter about the durian. They opened it up in the hotel room and started to eat. I think only a few minutes had passed and we got a phone call." The hotel staff demanded to know if they had durian in the room. Her mother lied. The official replied: "Madam, we have had reports of a durian smell in your vicinity, please tell us if you have durian." Mom did not relent. Her parents opened all the windows and were furiously fanning the room with the hotel magazine when they heard a knock on the door. A man dressed like an astronaut was standing on the other side.

There are varities that are bitterish in taste (much sought-after by connoiseurs; me too!) but generally they are creamy sweetish (some with mildly acidic) and can be filling.

I never liked those from Thailand which are exported and durian connoiseurs know they represent the worst of the varieties. They are usually large in size, less aromatic and very poor in taste when compared to Malaysian varieties.

Durians in Malaysia are "The Best"; never picked off the tree (like the Thais do) but collected from the ground after the fruits naturally drop. Taste, texture, aroma are sensational.

i think there are many types of durian from different countries. So which country's durian are you relating to?

The average taste for a durian is like adding yellow custard cream to mango.

The texture of a durian is like an avocado, the taste is like.. some really bad cheese but everyone has different sets of taste buds and opinions. Personally, i wouldn't want to eat it ever again, but my friend, he just loves them.

It taste delicious, its texture velvet and its smell is enchanting. These words are spoken out of deep respect for the delicacy, and nutritious value of the fruit.

----------
From a study on durian..http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=17567034
It was found that diets supplemented with durian, and to a lesser degree with snake fruit and mangosteen, significantly hindered the rise in plasma lipids and the decrease in antioxidant activity. The nutritional values were comparably high. In conclusion, it could be suggested that inclusion of studied tropical fruits, especially durian, in known disease-preventing diets could be beneficial.

it's very nice, i like everything about it. since ppl in my country are eating it so i think i grew up knowing it is a safe fruit to eat. when i was young, i don't really like the smell but i guess it's all come to psychology- because i saw everyone ate it...so i finally tried, and boy i once ate 8 durians- can u imagine that?!

obviously i love it, but i know some ppl don't, it's up to the preferences.

i know why undead monkey doesn't like it...for me durian is best eaten as it is. not great to make smoothies. good to make some dishes, ppl in my country use them in some of our dessert. but not smoothies.

I had a durian smoothy in Chinatown in Honolulu. Seriously thought a sewer line was broken until I realized the reek was coming from my drink. Had a very timid sip - yuck. Sometimes adventurous tastebuds do not pay off.
