I can't really understand why some people have an ethical problem with consuming honey. The bees don't seem to have anything better to do and they make a lot more than they need themselves. Isn't refusing to eat honey based on a Walt Disney sort of mentality where busy bees get to read a good book instead of collecting nectar?

Besides...I doubt this is a serious question - more a "bait the vegan" type post. But if it is serious, then the easiest answer is simply that honeybees do get killed during the process, which is against the vegan ethos.

I am vegan and find your question immature to say the least. considering that bees provide honey for BEES and that man replaces this balanced nutrition { for bees ) with unnutritional processed sugar . Also youll find that many of the queens which in a lot of cases have had there wings clipped ( which you can buy mail order) have been genetically bred. Honey is for bees they make it let them keep it. Walt Disney mentality my *rs* its a conscious descision made from a conscious attitude to life.

Honey bees never get the day off. They are controlled by a queen and don't get any vacation time.

What type of brain damage made you think that this is a legitimate question and who told you that we care if you understand our ethics?

Honey belongs to the bees, we have no need for it whatsoever. We aren't selfish and inconsiderate, therefore we do not steal.

1) walt disney was a serious anti-semite, which every self righteous vegan you use this metaphor on will really quickly point out

2) i have a ton of vegan friends, and they're more upset about ethical procurement of honey. thats to say, bees are really important parts of the environment, but the commerical honey industry keeps them all in an area thats all, oh, lets say, clover, and then unceremoniously dismantles the hive and squashes lots of bees in the process.

in short, vegans are pro-bee and pro bio-diversity. but you also get some that are all " i dont want any animal products in my life"

Because the honey is for their consumption and whatever they don't eat, they fan to turn into beeswax. Plus, bees are killed during the procurement of honey and the hives are destroyed in the fall.

Bottom line: Honey is an animal product, and vegans avoid animal products.

I am against the exploitation of all animals, regardless of size, species, "intellect", or cuteness. Consuming one animal product but none others does not go with my ethics. I would not be a positive role model if I consumed one animal-derived product but renounced all others. I would be a hypocrite.
Apart from that, the bees are producing the honey for themselves. We do not NEED honey. The bees do. We need bees to pollinate our crops, and I am so grateful that bees are around to contribute to the food chain in that matter. But the simple idea is that bees are animals, the things they produce are for themselves, and it is not my right to steal them.

Actually, if it weren't for beekeepers there would be no honeybees left in North America. Around 1987, a mite appeared that decimated honeybee populations (it's not the cell phones - urban legend) and the only ones who survived were the bees whose hives had been treated with a pesticide that got rid of the mite. Make of that what you will - either humans tampering with the natural order of things or humans saving the honeybees. As for me, I am very allergic to honey.

Vegans can be hippocrats sometimes.. They say you MUST NOT consume honey, yet consuming conventional produce sprayed with pesticides is just fine.. I don't get it either..

I know a lot of vegans who use honey and are on a strict ORGANIC diet.. To me that makes more sense, than avoiding honey, yet spraying pesticides in your garden..

I don't really understand if you dis-agree with how vegans consume different foods why you are in the vegan/vegetarian section.

Here's a quote that shows the typical vegan thinking . . .

"Consuming one animal product but none others does not go with my ethics. I would not be a positive role model if I consumed one animal-derived product but renounced all others. I would be a hypocrite."

Well, actually s/he would be "discerning" an showing a capacity to use one's intellect and reasoning as befits a human being. Instead we have these "honey" vegans who see either black or white.

Don't waste you time trying to reason with these fools.
