The herpes virus can remain dormant for a long time before you see any signs of it. This is why it's so important for people with herpes to be very aware of their outbreaks and when they are at the contagious phase.
Since you're first getting outbreaks now, I'd say you're in the early stages. If treated right away, you could keep it under control. Please talk to your doctor.

It is true that it can remain dormant - or that you may not even be aware that you are infected.
1) Have you been tested? Or are you assuming your diagnosis?
2) Has your boyfriend been tested? Or is he saying that he doesn't have it.
In any case, either
1) You had it all along, just now got a breakout. This happens.
or
2) You boyfriend has it and was not aware of it.
or
3) If both of you have been tested previously, and you were not cheating, I would ask your boyfriend if he has been cheating.
Herpes is tricky. People get it and don't know when or why. I wouldn't jump to conclusions. You both need to get checked out.
As for future outbreaks - they get better, less painful. You can also take medication to reduce the duration and frequency of outbreaks. Meditation helps as well.
Good Luck!

Herpes is caused by a virus that may have been dormant in your body for many years. Believe it or not, if you have had chickenpox when you were a child then you probably already hve the dormant form of the virus.
There are two main types of the virus. The first is Simplex Type 1 or (HSV-1) which causes Cold Sores. This virus, in its dormant state hides in nerves near the ear and usually cause cold sores on the lower lip. In rare cases they can cause damage to the eyes including causing blindness.
The second is Simplex Type 2 or (HSV-2) which is responsible for Genital Herpes. This virus in its dormant state hides in the nerves at the base of the spine and outbreaks are usually contained to the genital area.
Both types look nearly identical when viewed with a powerful microscope and both types can infect both the mouth and the genital area, HSV-1 is most often responsible with cold sores and HSV-2 is most often responsible for genital herpes. Both types are highly contagious.
Herpes differs from most sexually transmitted diseases in that it is able to hide dormant in your nerve cells usually at the base of the spine or near the ears, possibly for many years before becoming active. Once it becomes active the person who is infected will continue to experience outbreaks.

Herpes can remain dormant for a long time before you ever get a breakout. Definitely go get tested and get treatment so you can help keep it under control. However, you said it is just one pimple, so is it possible that it's just that, a pimple? Do you know if any of your past partners had herpes? Sometimes pimples occur in weird places and that area is one of them (though you should still be tested just to be safe).

If u haven't been sleeping with anyone else he did give it to you other areas are affected like little cuts on the balls, outbreak on the butt-cheeks. Look at std photos.com. get medications to reduce the outbreaks it can get worse.
