Most Asian countries have the least respect for animals, China, Indonesia, Malaysia etc. They treat them horrifically.
I don't think that any one country treats their animals the best. Each country will have people who care very much for animals, but there will also be people in those countries who have no respect for any animal at all. In the UK for example, we used to have fox hunting and hunting deer with dogs, both of which have been banned but some people still carry on, they say it's their way of life. Americans are known for their love of hunting, so they don't necessarily treat animals with much respect either.

I'd like to think that countries in the East would have the most respect because most are buddhist and meant to respect all living things. I've been to lots of countries in the east though and the only other vegetarians/vegans I met were monks. The exception is probably India because a lot of hindi people are vegetarian... not all of them though and as I haven't been there myself I cannot say. I think in the West people are very species-ist (is that even a word??) We may treat our dogs and cats a lot better than say, in india but the rest of the animal kingdom don't get much respect.

I'm not sure that any country as a whole treats animals with more or less respect than any other. It is something that is down to each individual.
But, can anyone tell me why people think it is worse to eat dogs and horses than cows or chickens? I understand the whole domestic pet mentality but there is no difference whatsoever.

I would have to agree with Cheycour. New Zealand.. Although i'm not a new Zealander, I did learn and study the culture for 7years+.
New Zealand significantly the Maori's have the upmost respect for animals.. the animals are blessed, and have a strong connection with the people of the land..
Look at Whale Rider.. this isn't just fiction.. These people really have a huge spiritual connection with the animals. Most indigenous People to any land do.. The aboriginals with the australian animals.. they mimic movements in their dances they have a strong connection.. The American Indian.. so I guess.. quite frankly.. it will depend on how you embrace culture.. if your accepting of culture.. you'll see alot respect the animals.. Animals wasn't just seen as a source of food.. Animals have significant spiritual relevance to the people of the land.. Animals are highly respected among many lands of people.. if you want to know who has the most respect then it will really depend on you and how you embrace culture.. and understand culture.. As I started answering the question ... it dawned on me.. that hey.. wait a minute.. there isn't just one country here that has more respect.. cause every country's tribal man respects the animal according to weather, climate, religion, culture.. differently..
Thanks for listening.

This is such a difficult question to be sure of an answer. But I must respond to an earlier answer mentioning Taiwan.
The treatment of animals in the food chain, particularly in the slaughterhouses where they are killed with a hammer, is atrocious. Cats and dogs roam the streets unwanted and ignored. The locals care zilch for the animals around them. There is no respect for any other forms of life.
Sad.

Probably India is among the best. I wouldn't consider France among the best, considering horse steak is a delicacy they serve there and some of it used to be imported from US slaughterhouses.
China would be among the worst. Probably wouldn't be an issue there in some regions to take a stray animal home and have it for dinner, or catch/kill any animal (except panda) by any means and eat it. There are plenty of videos showing the removal of skin/fur from animals that are alive.

In terms of the protection to ensure the welfare of animals provided by law, EU countries in general has the best laws and the middle east, China and Taiwan have the worst laws on animal welfare.
But at the end of the day, it's up to each individual how they treat their animas. Every country has those who treat their animals well and those who abuse their animals.
It is up to each of us to do our bit to raise people consciousness of cruelty against animals, all animals, not just animals in one particular country.
But I wouldn't want to be a fish in Japan. Youtube has lots of clips showing you how fish are filleted whilst alive for the ultimate freshness and people who eat it insist that's the only way. I wouldn't want to be a dog in Korea or Taiwan. Lastly, I wouldn't want to be anything in China.

You can't compare 1 country to another without understanding their culture.
In the us, europe and the uk, people treat cows & chickens like crap even tho they eat it.
In asia, ppl treat their animals with a lot of respect even if they are food. Think about the Kobe cow, the indian cows for milk...? Asia is huge and different regions within countries even have different beliefs.
Culture is completely different from one country to the next.
Jain religon originate in india says to respect the plants we shouldn't eat the roots and seeds so they may reproduce... they would say we don't respect plants for eating potatoes and nuts...
Think about it... this isn't a simple question to answer.
To those who said China, think about the zodiac & the animal dieties in chinese legends...

Jenny84,I dont think you have to go to China to learn of their animal abuse, there has been an European wide call for stores selling childrens toys,to clothing stores to boycott products,as toys have been found to be made of cat and dog fur,as are trims on coats and jackets.
The abuse became so widespread that even Heather Mills brought it to public attention on a documentary which showed cages and cages of cats and dogs half dead from dehydration, then showed the farmers skinning them alive.Due to this information,as well as my own research,China gets my vote as the worst.Ever.

India gives the most; that's pretty obvious. I have seen goats walking around in a busy street and people take great care not to hit them. I was visiting at my wife's uncle's house in India and a lizard went into his couch. I told him and he just said "they will not hurt you" and left it alone. On TV, I saw a temple in India where people feed milk to thousands of rats that are allowed to run free.
I'm not sure what country to pick for the worst, but I will say Spain--bull fighting is pretty creepy.
