Don't stress out about it too much. At 3 years old, I don't think he'd even notice if the food or games had anything to do with the pirate theme... It's more important to keep everybody happy and well-fed than worry too much about keeping with the theme.

Just pick foods that are easy to eat and easy to clean up when they make a mess (because you know they will, lol), and make sure you pick games where no one will get hurt...

When is the party? Could you start storing up on paper towel rolls and let them pretend they are spyglasses? They could even color them with marker, decorate with construction paper, etc.

How about pirate hats? They could each make a pirate hat out of paper. The step by step instructions are below. Just make sure you do it yourself a couple times before the party so you're "experienced" and can help them when they need it.

For prizes, you could get some chocolate coins (in the gold foil) and award them as "treasure"... Like when they finish the treasure hunt. You can probably get them for pretty cheap from the dollar store or Walmart.

And obviously, they can make eye patches and stuff. Get some brown or black felt from a craft store (I don't recommend paper because you don't want anyone getting paper cuts on their face), and pick up some yarn or elastic to go around their head.

Good luck!

Swashbuckler Snacks

When it comes to food, partygoers are usually perfectly content to eat pizza or hotdogs, which is certainly much easier on the hosts! However, if you have the time and would like to serve some sea fare, consider these ideas:
Make "Sea Water" by coloring pitchers of apple juice with blue food coloring. You can even add plastic plants purchased from a local aquarium- or pet-supply store.
Mix up a batch of "Quicksand" for your guests by preparing several packages of vanilla or butterscotch pudding and topping it off with "sand" made from crushed vanilla wafers or sugar cookies. For added effect, put the pudding in a new sand bucket, add the crumbled cookies and a few chocolate shells, and serve your concoction with a sand shovel.

Make a batch of Ginger "Beer" for your guests by filling frosted mugs ¾-full with ginger ale and ice. Top off each mug with root beer to give the drinks a frothy head.
Serve up a snack attack by mixing Goldfish crackers and shark-shaped fruit snacks as a fishy trail mix.
