I cannot eat beef because we Hindus respect the cows because she provides us milk from childhood much like milk from our moms. That is why I cannot eat beef. Now does buffalo qualify as beef or cow family?

Buffalo and cattle can breed and produce calves. Therefore, it must be in the beef family.

Well actually it could be said that you 'steal' the milk from a cow, or more precisely, you steal it from the calf which has been ripped away from it's mother so that it won't drink the milk which is rightfully theirs.

Sorry, don't mean any offense... I really do respect hinduism a lot but get really annoyed when all my hindi friends talk about respecting the cow but then support the dairy industry which makes them suffer and then wear leather shoes and belts!

In reply to your answer... yes, cows and buffalo's are part of the same family... much like a jack russell dog is in the same family as the labrador.

As cows are female cattle, and the reason as you explain it is to do with milk production, I would reason you can eat beef so long as it comes from male cattle, In the UK at any rate milking cows are too old to enter the food chain once they have ceased being able to give milk, so any beef would come from bullocks or heifers reared specifically for meat production not milking.
At the end of the day it comes down to you, if you want to try beef try it, its on the slab in th butchers if you don't eat it someone else will.

Interesting Q, - Having been to Delhi on many occasions it is often found that Buffalo are kept for food and slaughtered exactly for that purpose.

As the indigenous population of this part of India is of the Hindu faith, I can only assume that some Hindus are not only non-vegetarian but also eat Buffalo meat.

They're both beef as far as I know so they must be considered the samething. Some even call Moose meat a type of beef! I don't know if they are right or wrong! Don't care anyhow I'm a vegetarian!

Hmm. I'm not really sure. I think it's up to you and your beliefs to decide to eat it or not. I do think it's a kind of beef, but it's not the same as a cow so I don't know if you can eat it. I personally wouldn't cuz I'm a vegetarian, but it's up to you.

Hmmmmm.... while I can respect you for your beliefs . . . I'm wondering about beliefs that would allow human beings and their children to starve to death in sight of a perfectly healthy cow that would provide nourishment that would save their lives.

I mean if an adult wants to die for their beliefs ... that is their choice . . . but why let children die when they cannot make that choice for themselves?

Of course this is a good place to post this questions because you will get a lot of crazies that would do exactly the same thing.

How was that judgemental ashley?? she didn't accuse. She said 'it could be said' and also said she respected the hindus.

I think you shouldn't eat buffalo if you can't eat cows. They are too similar.
