Give me one good reason why anyone should be a vegetarian or a vegan. I have thought about it long and hard, and I cannot come up with a single reason. Do tell.

I just thought that I'd let you all know that I am in no way contemplating becoming a vegetarian. I have met people who are, and I have close friends who have made that life choice. I simply do not understand. None of them have given me a convincing reason as to why they have given up meat. I just don't want to remain ignorant to the subject, so I thought this would be a good outlet for people's opinions.

Well it's all about you and what you believe. Some people, like me, believe that it's wrong the way we just raise animals to kill them later for our own pleasure. Meat is a necessary part of your diet but can be easily substituted. I've been vegetarian for just a month, and I can easily tell you that I just plain feel better. I have a better mood and more energy.

I read somewhere that our bodies are more like a herbivore's than a carnivore's. the way our teeth, hands, and our entire system is.

But it's all about choice. If those types of things don't bother you, no one is forcing you to do anything.

If you want to be able to understand your friends than you should be asking this question of them. There are various reasons for people becoming vegetarian, this can include health, ethics, environmental, religious, etc.

If you are not open to listening why people become vegetarian than you will never really understand. I don't mean you cover your ears and refuse to hear it, you just don't have the same beliefs. Your understanding will never be the same as someone who truly believes in what they are doing.

It would be like a person who is very religious trying to explain what they do to someone who is an atheist. I understand why people believe in God, however since I do not I cannot fully appreciate why they do.

Since you eat meat(and probably enjoy it) you will never really be able to appreciate why people remove animals from their diet no matter how many explanations you receive. You can think about it as long as you want and never come up with a reason that is valid for you, but all I have to say to myself is I don't believe animals should have to suffer for my taste buds, that reason(among others) is valid to me.

what do you mean you couldn't come up with a good reason? are you joking?

meat is the main reason for high cholesterol and heart disease.
veganism/vegetarianism is better for health, for the environment and you won't be poisoning your body with dead rotting flesh. do you not know how the animals are tortured and killed for you food?

to the person that said that we can't live without meat due to it's protein.. that is false information. protein can be found in many other delicious food that is vegan friendly.

do some research because honestly it looks like you need to learn a lot. you asking for a reason to become a vegan or a vegetarian is proof.

10 Main Reasons for going VEGAN.

1) Animal products are unnecessary.
2) What you eat is a learned habit.
3) Much healthier to avoid meat and dairy products.
4) Much more environmentally friendly to eat a vegan diet.
5) Feed more people on a plant diet than animal based one.
6) Using animals is incredibly cruel. Why force any pain?
7) Religion/ spiritual reasons "Thou shalt not kill."
8) Saves money....
9) Reduces National debt.
10) Vegan food tastes great!

I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian, but I do enjoy vegetarian dishes and I'm a big fan of writers like Rose Elliot - her Pancake Gateau is 'to die for' I'd have no problem in being a vegetarian, but I love cheese, so being a vegan is out of the question for me.

I was a little kid, very small, maybe four years old.

I didn't know where meat came from, I just ate it. When I found out it came from dead animals, I didn't want to eat it.

I was unable to become a vegetarian until I was an adult, because my mother insisted it was not healthy.

As soon as I found out I didn't have to eat meat to live, I stopped eating it. I feel more comfortable with myself because of it; life is a sacred thing to me--I don't see why I would have any business taking it away from an animal that has done me no harm.

I'm not expecting to convince you of anything, but that's why I became vegetarian.

One of my best friends is a vegetarian with a sister who's a vegan. I once asked my friend why she was a vegetarian and she said," The thought of an animal being raised and slaughtered just so I could eat it feels wrong to me," Frankly, it's all ethnics. I myself absolutely love meat. I also adore animals to the extent of owning many of them. What a lot of people don't want to acknowledge is that humans have been eating animals for literally almost all of their existence. It's been a VERY important part of our diet for a long time. But nowadays, thanks to advancements, there are replacements people can eat to avoid eating meat if they think it's wrong. I myself say," If you don't like meat, fine. Just respect others that do," Because while my friend and I have almost opposite eating habits, I respect her and her choice by not mocking nor purposely eating meat in front of her. So she respects me and my choice thanks to that.
Basically, if you like meat, eat it. Just be respectful of your friends and try to avoid eating meat in front of them if you can. And yeah, hoped I helped! ^_^

If you want to you will, if you don't then you won't. Watch the movie Earthlings all the way through then think about it.

Edit:
Next time you see a dog or cat and pet it, then consider taking it home to eat it for dinner. If that thought bothers you then you will in a small way understand.

There's many things in this world that we can't understand for one reason or another. If others have told you their reasons for being vegetarian and you don't understand it, what do you hope someone on this forum can do? The only thing you can do is be respectful of that you can't understand, while tastefully disagreeing with it.

I'm a vegetarian because it makes me feel physically and spiritually better. I believe we can survive while reducing our harm to the environment and animals and so I strive to do this in my life.

I would never try and convince another to do anything. If you feel healthy and meat is not causing a problem fine it is only necessary for some due to difficulty processing meat but otherwise it is a lifestyle or religious choice.

You should become a vegetarian or a vegan if you want to, otherwise don't.

It matters little to me what you do or eat.
