Basically a random test of 163 doesn't tell you much. He needs to have a fasting (minimum 8 hours) test done.

I have read all the answers here and some are way way off base. The 163 means little and is not high. It should be less than 180 two hours after eating. A fasting blood sugar should be taken after 8 or more hours of not eating anything. Most importantly, you should discuss this with your doctor and let a trained medical person made the determination. Answers here on this type of site are varied and some absolutely wrong. Like the one telling you that 100 is normal. Talk to your doctor and not this site as IF he has diabetes, and nothing you have said indicates that, a doctor should help in making that determination. 100 is a decent fasting blood sugar level but 163 as number by themselves means little. What has he had to eat. What has he been doing. Please just check with your doctor and save a lot of worry and get a good answer. Doesn't sound like an ER type of need. Just your regular doctor should do.

Why would you think he is diabetic? How long ago did he eat? Is he otherwise ill, many things can cause a 163. Unless he is showing acute diabetes symptoms such a excessive thirst, frequent urination etc. he should see a doctor but save the expense of an er visit. Most doctors will do a quick visit if you have a family doctors.
Now if there is something else going on or he has other conditions do take him to the er.

You do need to take him to the doctor soon.
Regardless of what he had to eat and when, a person without diabetes should never have a sugar of 163.
That is not a life threatening number but it is something to be taken seriously.
Call your doctor and see what he/she has to say.
If you do have to go to the hospital, take all the things you and he need for at least 12 hours.Any medications ? PJ's for both of you and games [ video] to keep him busy.
Bring books or magazines for you.
Bring a pen and paper too. Things go fast and you may become confused .Writing it down will help.
You keep your chin up and call a relative to be there for you.Do not show your son that you are scared. This is very treatable.

Has he eaten anything in the last 2 hours. If not then he needs to be checked out. It sounds like he may be leaning toward diabetes but since I am not a doctor, I can't diagnose. Take him to a real professional for evaulation and advice. I would be worried too.

reading of 163 is diabetic. anything over 100 is. sometimes doctors will tell you that is borderline but its diabetic and its horrible. you need to have him checked now for sure and get him on meds and see specialist.

Normal is 110, and high is 200, your son's level is 163. I wouldn't worry as long as he is asleep. By morning his glucose level should be normal. Give him a smart breakfast and plenty of water, and some exercise, that should help keep his levels close to normal.
