they need to quit eating sugar and stuff with sugar in it. the reason why the girl was shaking is that her sugar was too low and what the mom did was right and that is giving her candy with sugar in it. so in both cases they were right. u have to give up sugar but u can have fruits and veggies with natural sugar in it.

Type 1 diabetics don't produce insulin. Insulin is the enzyme that breaks down sugar so that it can be used for energy or stored as fat for future use. The term sugar is used but it actually includes all carbohydrates. Carbs are complex sugar. So when type 1 diabetics eats carbs or sugar they need to take insulin to break down the sugar. If not enough insulin is taken all of the sugar does not get broken down and instead stays in the blood resulting in high blood sugar levels. When too much insulin is taken, too much of the sugar is broken down, resulting in low blood sugar. Low blood sugar what the girl on the show had. To correct the low blood sugar, you have to eat something, candy, juice and simple sugars are common because it goes into the blood stream quickly. So, type 1 diabetics can eat anything anyone else eats, they just need to take insulin to break down the sugar and turn it into use able energy.

Some diabetics can have sugar whenever they want. (Depends on the routine their doctors have instructed for them) Others can only have a strict amount. But now that the insulin pump is becoming more popular people can have sugar anytime at all. The thing you saw in the show is where the child's sugar was too low. To get your sugar up you need to have sugar. Diabetics are always struggling to contol their sugar. They give medication when their blood sugar is too high and sugar to recover from your blood sugar being too low. Diabetes in a constant struggle to be in control.

It's not that simple. Diabetics have problems with blood glucose levels. Basically, type I diabetics cannot make insulin, and type II are not able to use insulin very well and behave as if their bodies were resistant to it. Although type II diabetes is characteristically seen in obese adults, eating candy doesn't not directly cause diabetes. If a diabetic, or anyone for that matter, becomes severely hypoglycemic, he or she will have mental status changes and the shaking you saw. Candy by mouth quickly raises the blood glucose levels and is sometimes used to treat severe hypoglycemic episodes. Drinking a sweet juice may also be effective. Our bodies require glucose for energy, and indeed diabetics need glucose. However, foods very high in sugar can make keeping a diabetics blood glucose level difficult to control.
Hope that helps explain things. I'm a physician.

I am a diabetic for 29 years now and have seen it change drastically!! When I was a kid, they believed you had to stay away from sugar completely. (Unless you had an insulin reaction caused by low blood sugar, which is the shaking girl you saw.) Now, as long as you are careful of what you eat, you can eat anything. You just need to take extra insulin to cover the sugar that you eat. If you take too much insulin, you need sugar. So both are right.

A diabetic can eat sugar...within reason.
We are allowed treats once in a while. It's all about portion control. If I go out with my boyfriend for ice cream, he will order a sundae while I might get a child-size ice cream cone. I'll eat about half of it. I take insulin to cover it.
As for giving a diabetic sugar because they are shaky...that is right on. The diabetic is having an insulin reaction (their sugar is too low) and they need a little sugar to bring it back up to a safe level. Low sugar can have dire consequences...loss of consciousness, coma and death if not treated.

Diabetes means your body has trouble turning sugar (glucose, actually) into energy. Usually that means limiting or avoiding things with sugar and carbohydrates (both have glucose) in them. People with diabetes take insulin lower the amount of glucose in their blood. However, if a person with diabetes takes too much insulin, they need a quick fix of sugar to get their blood sugar back to "normal."
So a person shouldn't eat too much sugar, but sometimes it's needed in an emergency.

Too much medication can cause a low blood/sugar and give someone the shakes as well as a rapid heart rate. When this happens, a little sugar gives quick relief.

when you are type one this means that you take shots. you also when your sugar goes low you sometimes need abit of sugar to raise it up so you don't shake. geenrally if you take a small glass of orange juice it will do the trick too much can cause it to go high.
