First please avoid the person above me they are promoting a very dangerous scam cure for Diabetes! I drink soda myself even my mom drinks regular soda when her sugar drops. If sugar alone caused Diabetes then 99.9% of the world's population would have Diabetes.

Diabetes is 2 distinct diseases. Type 1 and Type 2. Type
2 can be considered wearing out the islet cells that produce insulin. The effect is that you still have enough insulin but it does not work properly(transferring sugars from your blood to your cells) so you get high blood sugars which does a whole list of bad things to your body. This primarily affects over weight people especially those who have been overweight for some time(years)
With type 1 the cause is still not entirely clear but it is an immune disease that destroys the islet cell to the point your body can not produce any insulin.
Drink 3 cans of sweetened soda is not good for you but even if you did it your whold life it may not "cause" diabetes. If it caused you to become overweight though you would more likely than not become type 2 diabetic by the time you start to collect social security. If you made some of those sodas sugar free, and you didn't overdo the deserts and you kept you weight down you only need to worry about you genes.

I don't believe diabetes is brought on by what you have or haven't been eating. It's simply a dysfunction of your pancreas, depending on what type diabetic you are talking about.
Drinking that much regular soda though for anyone is not wise, and for a diabetic can be dangerous. Type 2 diabetics at least don't have the ability to combat that much sugar at once. The cells can't absorb the sugar and so that sugar floats around in the blood doing damage to various body parts.
I could be wrong but I believe in Type 1's their pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to combat the sugars consumed. In Type 2's they have the insulin but it's missing a key that allows the cells to absorb the sugar. In both cases it's how your pancreas produces the insulin that makes you diabetic.
It's a little more complicated than that, but I would cut out the sugary drinks and get more exercise... then you wouldn't have as great a chance to become diabetic.

The medical industry does not necessarily link sugary drink with Diabetes.... YET. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 31. There is no history of it in my family (not even a type 2). I was prone to drinking 3-4 rum and cokes every evening and am convinced it caused my Diabetes. The soda industry (Coke, Pepsi) has a huge lobby to keep this out of the public spotlight. The Union Tribune Newspaper (San Diego) did a mock trial against the soda industry recently (try http://www.signonsandiego.com).

it is mostly cause by the genes that have been passed on to you from your family. Diet soda actually causes some ppl to have lupus like symptomes. america is seing a rise in diabetes due to the increase eating of processed foods. We no longer eat healthy.

it is in the family. its hereditary. no amount of pop will make you hae sugar unless you will be from what you are made of. its not that it chooses you and that you ate too much sweets its what is in the make of you and that there is no insulin then you need it for you are diabetic.
