So I have pinkeye but my doctor thinks it might be a virus, so if its not cleared up by Monday then I have to go back to the doctor. He also said it might be herpes. So can you get herpes by just kissing someone or making out with someone? Or do you just get herpes by sexual contact?

There are a total of 8 different herpes viruses. ALL of them are spread by DIRECT skin to skin contact. Genital herpes can also be spread by sex (vaginal, oral, or anal).

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) is usually responsible for cold sores (oral herpes), but herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2) can also cause them.

Genital herpes is usually caused by HSV2, but it can also be caused by HSV1.

Cold sores are usually spread by kissing someone who has cold sores. You can also get them from drinking after someone who has cold sores, sharing chap stick, lip stick, cigarettes, etc. Basically anything a person with cold sores has on their lips can spread the virus is someone else uses that item immediately after that person.

Genital herpes is almost always spread by sex (vaginal, oral, or anal). It can also be spread by DIRECT skin to skin contact or by birth if the mother has the virus. Being born with herpes is VERY rare though.

Herpes can affect the eyes (ocular herpes) and other parts of the body as well. If a person touches a herpes sore and then rubs their eyes it can spread the virus. Herpes sores can also appear on the fingers (herpetic whitlow) and can appear as a rash all over the body (chickenpox and shingles). Chickenpox and shingles are herpes simplex virus 3 (HSV3).

Take care!

Yes. Herpes is spread from skin to skin contact even if it isn't sexual. It is possible to have a herpes infection in your eye, although that is usually caused by oral herpes (HSV1). It is called ocular herpes and is basically having a "cold sore" in your eye.

If you follow the link, you can read a lot more about it.

Please watch out for misinformation. ALL herpes lasts forever. It is not true that a cream will "cure" herpes type 1. Abreva is approved to stop an outbreak sooner, but the virus stays for life and can come back. Nothing "cures" herpes of any kind.
Also, most if not all cases of eye herpes are cause by herpes type 1- "cold sores" because of the proximity to the mouth.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about six years ago, when I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video everything changed https://tr.im/HERPESCure2o15fIYp

Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the man of my dreams. This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

There are two kinds of herpes. One kind is what you get a cold sore from and that is something you can get from kissing someone. The other kind is an STD and is the one that lasts forever. The cold sore variety is easy to be rid of with medication. The other you can only treat the symptoms--it never really goes away, but stays dormant in the system from time to time until stress or other triggers inspire an outbreak. This type is generally only found on or near the genitalia, but has been known to outbreak elsewhere. If you're unsure, ask the doctor what type he was speaking of.

Good luck!

There are three kinds of herpes viruses: herpes simplex-1, herpes simplex-2 and herpes zoster [shingles]. Herpes simplex-1 is transmitted by saliva, and generally causes sores or blisters in the lips, mouth and other facial areas. Although most people develop it during childhood, you can acquire it by kissing or making out by an infected person. Herpes simplex-2 is sexually transmitted, and can be also be acquired by kissing or making out, because it may be present in the mouth and genitalia of an infected person. It can cause sores and blisters in the genitalia, mouth, the lining of the brain [meningoencephalitis], and the cornea or conjunctiva of the eyes. This is probably the one that you've got, and it's of utmost importance that you keep up your appointments, so can you get treated and the little bug doesn't get a chance to migrate to your brain. In no way is my intention to scare you, but not getting treated can have disastrous consequences. To learn more about herpes infection of the eyes, look up the following links:

There's more than one kind of herpes. Herpes I is the "cold sore" kind of herpes. The real bad herpes (simplex) II (I think it's "II" -- Roman 2) is "genital" herpes, although it can be spread to areas that you wouldn't think are necessarily "genital," including the eyes, mouth, anus, or other mucous membranes exposed to the virus. That's almost exclusively by sexual activity, by which I don't mean kissing, unless it's kissing like, you know...
