I used garbonzo beans, oil, and garlic but it did not taste like the humus that we had at the restaurant. Does anyone have a solid recipe that they have used many times before?

I have been making it for years.....here's the recipe

Blend together 1 can garbanzo beans, lemon juice, 2-3 garlic cloves, salt, and tahini (seseme past usually found at regular supermarkets)

You just add the things to taste....it always comes out great!

Make my version of houmous in minutes! Its very low in fat-far lower than bought varieties.

2 spring onions
1 clove garlic crushed
grated rind of 1 lemon
410g cooked chick peas canned drained and rinsed.
200 g low-fat cheese (7 oz with garlic and herbs)
1/2 tsp salt (or less)
1/2 tsp pepper (or less )
3 sprigs fresh mint.

Put the spring onions, garlic, chickpeas, soft cheese and lemon rind into a blender or food proscessor, add the salt and pepper. Blend for 15-20 seconds until smooth.
Tip into a bowl, then serve, scattered with a few mint leaves.

Try adding some tahini sauce, it's made from ground up sesame seeds and is usually an ingredient found in hummus. It helps to smooth out the texture of the chick peas.

That's one way. But I leave out the garlic and use lemon juice for a little tangy taste. Just personal preference.
