Yes. Cold sores ARE the herpes virus. Cold sores can be caused by either herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) or by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2).
Cold sores are NOT considered a STD though because the most common way of contracting them is by kissing someone who has cold sores, unlike genital herpes, which is almost always spread by sex.

Yes. It is herpes.
Cold sores are most often caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1 aka HHV-1). The other strain of the related herpes virus is HSV-2 (aka HHV-2) which (in certain areas) causes the majority of genital herpes infections.
It is possible for HSV-1 (cold sores) to cause genital herpes (via contact/oral sex), in fact in some countries/areas the majority of genital herpes has been found to result from an HSV-1 infection. The incidence and prevalence of HSV-1 causing gential herpes is on the rise (still with marked variation) around the world.
So, a lot of the answers above are inaccurate.
If you experience the occasional cold sore simply refrain from oral sexual contact from the onset of the first symptom (burn, itching, tingling) until the cold sore has healed completely.
If you experience a lot of recurrent cold sores, I suggest speaking with your health care practitioner about treatments to shorten the course of the outbreak and possible make you less infectious. I would also recommend informing your partners and using a barrier for oral sex, whether that be a condom or a dental dam.

I got diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about six years back, when I was still in college and had a dumb one-night stand. I understand lots of girls will declare this, but I swear I had certainly not done that sort of thing before. I just made a huge mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date men again. After all, who wants to go out with someone that has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/MOYXP everything changed.
Not only was I able to eliminate all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than three weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just a week ago, in front of everyone in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This system provided the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the World.

Yes. However it's a variety called Herpes Simplex. Once you have it you'll always have it. The cold sores can re-occur if you're ill or run down. Don't mess with the cold sore, be very hygenic washing hands as you can spread it anywhere on your body. I've found the best way to keep them away is to keep taking multi-vitamins - keep your immune system good. You get less of them as the years go by as your body builds up a resistance but once you have it you always will.

Yes. There are 2 types of the Human Herpes Virus that cause cold sores, HHV 1 & 2. Type 1 usually causes oral herpes (cold sores/fever blisters) and type 2 typically causes genital herpes, although in about 10% percent of infections, type 2 causes oral and type 1 causes genital. Oral herpes is spread easily by contact (kissing!).

If it is a "cold sore" around your mouth then it means you probably have herpes simplex. It's quite common and nothing to fret over. It's not genital herpes. There are OTC meds to alleviate the pain and speed along the healing. See you local pharmacy for advice.
