Well, just realize that low on vitamin D, and a vitamin D deficiency are 2 different things. A deficiency is a severe shortage for long term. If you get a little low on it now and again, not much will happen. However, if you are chronically short on vitamin D, these are the kinds of things that have been linked to a deficiency in vitamin D:
impaired bone mineralization
bone softening diseases
rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults
possibly contributes to osteoporosis
Vitamin D deficiency may also be linked to many forms of cancer.

According to an article published in last month's issue of the Journal of the American Nutriceutical Association, we don't know all of the things Vitamin D does and we don't know all of the things a lack of it will do.
Vitamin D is a hormone. As with all hormones, its presence has a balancing effect on all of the other hormones in the body. New research shows it helps the body ward off cancer. It is also one of the hormones that helps transport calcium to the living cells in your bones. Without it, your bones will not form correctly. Because your bones are made from living cells, they are always "forming" so Vitamin D will affect the quality of your bone structure for your entire life.
Vitamin D can also have a connection to your cholesterol levels. In some people, too little Vitamin D can cause the body to increase cholesterol production because it is used as a building block in the construction of all hormones.
Lack of vitamin D can also lead to inflammation which can affect any and every part of the body as well.
Because of this, the list of things likely to happen if you get low enough on Vitamin D could be nearly infinite. All systems of the body are connected and that means the lack of an essential part can affect structures and functions everywhere.

Vitamin D helps to maintain the level of calcium in your blood. With insufficient calcium, the bones can begin to demineralize or soften. In severe cases they can bow or break. There is also bone pain associated with this.
In Vitamin D deficient children, the bones of the legs and sometimes the arms bow, with irregular appearing growth plates on s-ray. The condition is known as rickets.

The first bad symptoms you will have are terrible pains in the joints and deep in the bones. After that your bones will begin to crumble. Eventually you will be open to all kinds of infections and cancers. But it is a long and painful process. Get out in the sun, and take your vitamin D supplements.
