The Japanese were occupying troops, they plundered the countries natural resources particularly the products of the French owned plantations, they also treated the Native Vietnamese with barbaric contempt, and forced many to work in camps to produce supplies for the war.
This happened everywhere the Japanese occupied in Asia.

Look up Ho Chi Minh, he was the leader of the resistance and got support(not much but some) from the US and British to destabilize the japanese hold on the area.
