German is one of the 3 official languages of Belgium, which has the very best chocolate in the world.
You will be able to ask questions and get the chocolate you want ( when you go to Belgium,) not have to just point at a chocolate and hope it isn't something you hate.

It comes in very handy in Eastern Europe, because a lot of people know a little bit of German and most of the languages here, like Polish, are impossible to understand.
Otherwise, Germany is possibly second only to England in its literary tradition, and for an English speaker it's fascinating to observe the similarities and differences with English.
It is quite difficult to grasp, though!
I get lots of translation work in German, so it definitely wasn't a waste of time!

hi,
given that german is the most spoken language in europe (about 100 mio native speakers), aside english which is often only "second" or "vehicular" language here, to learn german is not the worst thing you can do. it's spoken in germany (surprise!!! 82 mio), austria (6 mio), in parts of switzerland, belgium, liechtenstein, and in northern italia (south tirol)... it's usually well spoken in parts of the eastern european coutries (poland, the czech republik, slovakia, rumaenia) and as there are many turkish and greek people in germany, it's quite common there too.
you've got to know that it's also the language of great philosophers (nietzsche, heidegger, kant, marx...), great authors and poets (thomas mann, goethe, schiller, stifter...) and that many a compositer is of german origin (van beethoven, mozart, schubert, schumann, bach, telemann, händel, haydn...). so you not only learn a tongue, you also learn the culture that comes with it.
have a great time, and if you already speak english, then german shouldn't be that much a problem...

it depends on where you live. if you live in canada, english and french are important. if in southern US spanish is not important but helpful. German is actually the next language I'm gonna speak I cant speak it fluently yet but I can get around in germany if people talk slowly. anyway it is one of the better languages to learn, I think.

The best reason, and the biggest help to learn a foreign language is to like it. If you must be convinced at first - forget it.
