it gives a sense of independence for the child ; As a nursery nurse it is important 2 give the child some independence :

Sence of self esteem (feel good factor)
Introducing choice (making own decisions)
Sence of freedom
Ssnce of self worth (feels trusted n excited about having a choice on what 2 wear)
Also sense of achievement (done it on there own especially if they get compliments on how pretty they look)

There is so much more even tho what they normally choose doesnt match, or not suitable for weather this is them gettin a sense of who they are and soly becoming indepent n respected of having a choice

GIVE THEM A THIS OR THAT CHOICE SO AT LEAST YOU HAVE A HAND IN IT. THAT WAY THEY CAN GET A FEEL FOR WHAT IS DESIRABLE FOR THEM TO WEAR AND YET THEY STILL HAVE A CHOICE. THEN EVENTUALLY YOU CAN BACK OFF AND ALLOW THE CHILD TO PRETTY MUCH DECIDE ON THEIR OWN BY THE TIME THEY ARE ABOUT 9 OR 10 YEARS OLD, DEPENDING ON HOW THEY DO THE FIRST FEW TIMES YOU LET THEM. PICK ON THEIR OWN. MY AUNT HAD A GOOD IDEA. SHE WOULD SAY PICK OUT YOUR 5 OUTFITS FOR THE WEEK AND SHOW THEM TO ME BY SUNDAY ..... THAT WAY YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY DURING THE WEEK. IT IS ALL TAKEN CARE OF BEFORE THE WEEK EVEN BEGINS.

so they can be individual. My neice went through a phase of picking her own clothes - she used to wear some very odd combinations (she has grew out of it she is a teenager). There is nothing wrong with parents picking out the clothes there children will wear

I wouldn't have even considered such a notion. Parents of children who are allowed to decide this, that and the other, usually end up with out of control kids who insist on designer clothes. But, if you don't mind standing around for half an hour or so whilst Keilie or Tasha peruse their wardrobe before getting ready for school, then do it. My sister was like that, gave total authority to her kids, the burning question of the day was "what are you going to wear today?" - several hours later - yawn!!!! Same for mealtimes as well, they were always asked what they wanted to eat, and if they weren't hungry they were given crisps and cake instead. To my mind, this doesn't build a close knit relationship with your kids, just gets you so irritated, you want to scream!!!!

So they can develop their own personality and sense of style. But I do feel it must be within reason. Like they should choose whether to wear the blue or the red shirt but they shouldn't be able to choose a floral top and a checkered pair of shorts. I think parents should stop their kids from wearing things that don't match to teach them fashion sense.

I don't think it is when they are really young. I usually let mine try to pick out something and then have them change it if it's outrageous. Like a bathing suit with a pj bottom.

So, I try to say things like pick a short sleeved top and shorts. Then at least its in the ball park. I don't think it's bad to help though. Or, even just dress them.

I think there are more important things in life...my son can choose from a few things that I have chosen but if I let him choose he would not look too good. He would mis-match, where shorts with jumpers and all sorts!!
He's 6

it is important for kids to pick their own clothes because sometimes the parents dress them in clothes that are not their style

We can't control everything in their life. You chose what's appropriate, they pick from your choices. We do need to allow some freedoms for our children

i dont think thats a good idea..if i was 8 and picked out my clothes, i'd look like a disaster!!
