It's human nature to be inquisitive, especially about oneself.
While still only 12 weeks in utero, a baby has senstation in its fingertips and will be touching its face and exploring its mouth etc.
There's no reason a 20 month old who is still figuratively and literally finding its feet shouldn't be the same.

After 3 boys you learn there's nothng you can do! It must be fascinating to a wee boy - the fact he has this bit on his body that's so flexible and stretchy. Go with the flow! If you 're not sure about it then he'll be easily distracted and forget about it till the next time. It's as much interest to him at this age as pulling on your nose. The latest question from my 6 year old was why did his willy feel sore and hard and point out like a stick? Even my 3 year old complains his willy is sticking out back and forth, although this could also be a reaction to needing the toilet! So that's something for you to look forward to!

If its any consolation my son does it too and he is 3 and a half. I have looked it up on the net and what i got is that it is common amoungst children and that esp in the toddler years their little thingy is a facination to them and that what they are doing feels good to them but not in a sexual way. I also learned that we need to learn to ignore it and if in a case that you can see the hand heading in that direction when you are in public or have visitors around you need to get his attention with a squeaky toy or anything else you can think up so as to sidetrack him and avoid the embarresment we as parents feel but our little ones do not. It also says that these are phases and will end at some time or another. I am also a nurse but only experienced this when i had my youngest son.

Hey why not?!!!! Its there, its within reach and its fun and as my 2 1/2 year old little boy discovered at an early age its surprising the lengths, angles and directions they can make it go. And you have to remember all our adorable little boys are just little men in the making, so unfortunatly this is something they'll probably never grow out of!!

Hi there, my son is three and it doesn't stop, everytime he has his pants off or also in the bath he stretches it, sometimes it looks like it must really hurt but he doesn't look at it and play with it he will be just nattering to me, stretching and squishing it!!! i think it's just natural they go straight for it and start messing with it, my son does it all the time and i too have 2 other girls who dont seem to go for their bits all the time!
its nothing to worry about =)

It's not sexual, they're just curious, like when they're babies and find their toes lol. When it's shut away in a nappy all day, they're bound to be interested when it comes out! My little boy gets erections at the drop of a hat which is kinda gross for me, but it is normal. It's just a physical reaction. Don't worry!

Your right, nothing changes! LOL It is completely normal. He plays with it because it feels good! You know as a nurse about he pleasure principal all humans have ( if it feels good, do it!) so why wouldn't he do it? You have an itch, you scratch...you are tired, you yawn...all basic reactions to stimuli. :)

Because (1) it's there, and it's a curiosity; (2) it doesn't hurt to do so. It's completely normal. About the only thing you need to worry about is teaching him when/where it's okay and not okay to touch one's self...
