I've been wearing contacts for more than 15 yrs now and I never heard anything like that before. I do know however that you have to keep your contacts clean every day other wise they will acummulate debris and protein and they will start to detiriorate and this is when your eyes can be scratched from the left over debris. Now, maybe your mom is thinking that you will be wearing the same pair of contacts for years, this will be the case only if they are hard contacts which almost no one does anymore. Your optometrist will recommend the best material to use depending on what your eyesight is and if you have astigmatizm or the other that escapes me right now. If your mom and you decide on getting contacts always remember to clean them every day after all, what would you do without being able to see!!!!

You don't say how old you are but provided you are responsible you shouldn't have a problem with contacts. I've been wearing contacts for over 20 years now. I first got contacts as a teenager. My daughter started wearing contacts a few months ago. She is 13. The only time I ever hurt my eye because of my contacts was one time I took them out when they had dried out. So, don't ever try to take out your contacts when they are dry. See if you can get your mom to take you to the eye doctor to talk to the dr. about contacts. The dr. might be able to alleviate her fears.

I've been wearing soft contact lenses for 24 years and my eyes have never been scratched. If you get hard contacts, a callous can form on your corneas.
