tea leaves need to be steeped in hot water. When you microwave the tea bag with the water, you are nuking the tea leaves and nuking the actual bag.

I've never tried this but I think nuking tea leaves would just be like nuking a salad. That's why you might be getting a funny taste. Not worth experiement with though.

The recipe of tea follows the BREWING process..
in which it is provided heat from one direction and is constantly stired to mix the flavor of tea leaves in tea bags into water.
But in micro wave, the ingredients stay in there position. Though being heated, they are not stired and therefore don't mix properly.
Hence you don't get that open flame/heat taste.

The tea in the bag has to develop it's flavor by steeping in the hot water. In the microwave, it has no time to steep and develop its flavor.
