I’ve been dyeing my hair black for about 4 years. I’m bored of it and I want a change. The problem is I can’t let it grow out cause I have waist length hair and want to lose as little length as I can get away with. I’m afraid of bleaching it out cause because my hair is so dark it will undoubtedly damage it, maybe beyond repair. I was thinking of going red so I’ll have to somehow get it really light…can anyone suggest the least harmful way to go from black to red???

Rather than dye it, use red frost on it.

That's a job best left to a pro, as dyed black hair is very difficult to lift. At a good salon, they can use a stripper to lift out the black dye to a point that it can be recolored another shade, either auburn or dark red. They can also deep condition ur hair to help with any dryness or damage. A lot will depend on what u have been using to dye ur hair with. Don`t attempt this urself, as u may end up with burnt orange hair.

The best way is to go to a salon and have them tint your color and re-dye it. The tinting is less harmful then bleaching and won't have the same odds of damaging your hair.

Please dont try to do it yourself. 4 years of black box color is not something to try and take on yourself, I guarantee you will either have to go to a salon to get it fixed or go back to black. Bleaching it will damage your hair especially if its waist length (think of how old that hair is). Depending on how vibrant you want the red to be the professional color line Goldwell has a highlift red color that you would not have to bleach your hair to use (but sort of a catch22...since box color especially black box color is unpredictable) but you would have to see a professional to have it done. Call local salons to see who uses Goldwell and let them know what you were looking to have done. But if you are all set on doing it yourself...DO NOT bleach it to a light blonde...the way color works is it penetrates your cuticle and sticks to the natural color in your hair so if you bleach all the color out of your hair it will have nothing to stick to (especially reds...since they fade fast anyways) lift it to a medium orange (orange is close to red so it will help the color) then deposit the red you want on top.

well I don't think you should do on your own,
try doing it in salon, because they know what they doing.

another thing your hair has to be bleached then
can apply what other color.
or else it wont show.

& yes bleaching can damage the hair.
