Politics, probably. The Bible in it's original text was great, as far as I believe. It is the mistranslations and doctoring that has turned it into something that might be contradictory. Of course there is still much good that can come from it, but I can't deny that it was doctored as part of a power struggle over the people.

Editing the Bible came in to favor along with the Protestant Reformation. Catholics, nor the Catholic Church "added" books. It was Protestants who removed certain Books that supported certain Catholic positions they did not agree with. The original King James of 1611 actually had all 73 Books still found in Catholic Bibles. KJV was later cut back to the current 66 Books.

There are several peoples responsible for editing the Bible according to history.
What motivated them? It was done purely to satisfy their own needs politically and financially.

Constantine, a pagan Roman Emperor, and the Council of Nicaea did that in 325 AD. Yep, the bible was compiled and edited by a pagan, and they all determined whether or not jesus was to be considered divine...300 years after he died.
the bible is pretty ridiculous, isn't it....especially when you realize that its writings were word-of-mouth passed on for decades before ever written down... yet, today, eyewitnesses cannot accurately report what they see ONE HOUR LATER!
it's hogwash and complete and utter nonsense.
