Why is it that you can pick and choose what to believe and not to believe in the bible? How do you decide that this is true and this isn't? I asked a question a couple days ago about the verse in the OT about stoning your daughter if she wasn't a virgin. And I got replies ranging from, thats the old testament, we don't follow that, to that is only jewish law, if you are not jewish, it does not apply. So why do you not follow the old testament, it is all gods law correct? And yes, I know jesus died in the NT for the sins, but that does not change the fact that it is all supposedly gods word, so you need to heed all the advice given to it. So, the question is, how do you chose what to believe and what not to believe in the bible? Is it simply if it makes you look bad, that you deny it?

I believe in the whole thing, it is not pick and chose the new testiment is the word which we must live by, the old testiment is just the old way of life before the Savior. Jesus said in the new testiment, that this is the new law what he was teaching.
The OT was the old law, which Jesus, replaced by comming to earth.

Certain aspects of OT law were repealed by the NT. Whenever the OT & NT are in conflict, the NT prevails.
Same goes for whenever one of the epistles conflicts with one of the gospels--Jesus' words prevail over Paul, James, Peter, etc...
For a more matter-of-fact answer, see the story in John 8:1-11; this is a story that directly relates to your question.
If a Christian ever tells you that the OT Law no longer applies to them whatsoever, tell them to look up Romans 6:15-7:25.

The Old Testament covenant was fulfilled with the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus who made a new Covenant with mankind which pretty much did away with everything except the 10 commandments.
The 10 commandments are very relevant for modern man and we could do a lot worse than follow them (which few people do these days).
As for the outdated laws and customs in the old testament, you can't really judge them by today's standards because we live in a very different world than ancient man did.
Anthropologists and Sociologists could probably come up with some logical reasons why ancient man would have strict rules about modesty, adultery, who you married and who you had children with etc. so we can't look at them from our perspective and automatically say they were inappropriate for society in those times.

The Bible is God's written Word to us.
It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit.
“Above all you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:20-21. (New International Version)
Breakdown of the Bible
36 human authors inspired entirely by God over 1600 years.
66 separate books

Genesis- The creation of the world, sin, flood and birth of Israel
Exodus to Esther- History of the nation of Israel
Job to Proverbs- the books of poetry and wisdom
Isaiah to Malachi- Prophecy or foretelling of the future events to come.
27 New Testament
Matthew to John - Four Gospels representing the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ now with all authority in Heaven and earth.

If only religious people would study the History of Civilization first. Should biblical people be alive today, their reasoning would be laughed at. Our God Concept including the Bible came from ancient people whose highest intellect told them that the earth was flat. Biblical people were intellectual misfits. That's why knowledge is the enemy of religion. However religious people keep their heads buried in the sand because their religion tells them that if they do, the get a reward after they are deceased.

Whenever there is an issue at hand, Jesus' moral teachings found in the New Testament always take precedence over the Mosaic laws of the Old Testament covenant...

There was a man named Jesus. He was more than simply a man but God with us in the flesh.
Why is this significant if Christ did not destroy the law?
Christ fufilled the law.
It would take the entire Bible to explain completely what that means. I will do my best.
God gave man the law. God is all knowing and knew before hand that man could not live up to his righteousness.
Yet God gave us the law any way....Why?
It was never God's plan that the law would make any man righteous,
God foreknew that man would sin and God is a righteous God and could not overlook sin.
The wages of sin is death.
The law demonstrates man's need for God.
It is God who sustains a man.
All men sin and all men die.
It was God's plan before he created the world to be a savior to his people.
God came to the world in the form of a man Jesus Christ to overcome temptation as a man, to remain perfect and to pay the penalty of death fro all who accept the atonement.
Jesus overcame sin and death and was resurrected in glory.
Those who accept this atonement are now by faith made new and free.
We are no under any law but are by faith made new in agreement with God's righteousness.
We no longer worship God in flesh and traditions of law but in spirit and truth.
Now this is the very short version of the truth the complete version is in the word of God.
Those who seek God's truth will receive a gift called faith.
Through faith comes revelation and a personal relationship with God.
God does not change a man by the law but changes a man by the atonement. It is not good that a man should be under the law but that hsi heart is changed and he is in agreement with God's righteouness, God's plan was to make a new man not a man who was under the law but a man who was righteous according to the law.

Why do people follow the bible at all?? That book has been interpreted over and over by so many people. Those people put into their interpretation their own personal feelings, needs, and wants. Haven't you ever told a story to find out that after it's traveled through many mouths, it's not even close to what you said and/or meant??
Religion was created to assume power over others. By damning those that have free-thinking minds keeps them in fear of their own free-will.
There is actually a cool free movie to watch that gives an astrological meaning to the bible. I found it interesting. Now, you all can fast forward it to the 5 min. mark and watch it. It lasts about 30 min. before it goes into Conspiracy type theories. it's at: http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com

The bible is not the word of God. People claim it is because they are taught that it is. Who teaches this, the institutionalized religions do. Why do they continue to teach things when some of the leaders know the truth, because they need the followers support. Without the support, without the foundation, the material-churches will come crashing down. The only church to attend is the temple within, the temple in which the living God resides, within us, we are that church. Each of us then becomes a living bible, not the crystallized book of old.

They cling to the old testament when it is convenient. And they don't really study the bible on their own. They jump back and forth, taking things out of context, and piece together whatever their leaders want.
