Most often the pain experienced in the amputated limbs is neuropathic in nature. This means it is a function of the nerves transmitting an impulse though no apparent tissue damage has occured.

The most common treatment for this is oral medications, usually an anti-seizure medication or a synthetic derivitive of one of these. Other treatments include chiropractic therapy, accupuncture, biofeedback, and some other alternative therapies.

There is the possibility that it is an over worked muscle, then soak the muscle, do mild stretching exercises and take an analgesic medication such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.

If you provide more information as to the specifics of the pain I could be more informative. Try decribing your pain using the PQRST method

P= Pain - Level of pain 1-10 10 being the worst pain you can imagine. Also decribe point of maximum pain.
Q=Quality - does it stab, throb, burn???
R+ Radiation - does the pain occur in one place or does it radiate up the arm to the shoulder and if so what part of the arm do you feel it on?
S = Sensations is there any numbness tingling or other sensations associated with the pain?
T= Timing when does the pain occur, time of day, with movement, at rest, certain positions increase or decrease the pain??

I know this is a lot to ask but this is the minimum information needed to try and determine what is the cause of your pain and the best therapies for it.

You don't say if the pain is in the remains of the arm that has been amputated or if it's in your other arm.

If it's in your other arm. It could be because you are over using your arm and it could be the muscles contracting or as you say a trapped nerve. If it continues speak to your doctor or try alternative medicine such as Arnica.

A friend of mine lost his arm and for a few years he said that he could feel a pain in the area where his arm should be. He said that it was a throbbing pain.

I suggest you see a doctor. It could be many things and none of them are insignificant. Try taking some aspirin, eating a banana or drinking some pickle juice to help you out til you get there.
