Hi .Yes you will have to have an amplifier to power the speakers in a surround sound system. You will need a Source first (DVD/CD Player,VCRs Satellite Receivers,AM/FM Tuners Tape Decks, etc.) The Amplifier you will need is a 5.1 Surround Sound Receiver which contains the Preamplifier,Tuner, and five independent Power Amplifiers.

Audio and Video signals are sent to the Preamplifier, which selects the input (picking which source you want to listen to or watch)controls the volume ,processes the sound and controls the amount of power the amps give to the speakers
The preamp is also referred to as a control amplifier or controller. The surround processor that is built into the preamp. takes the audio signals from the Source components (DVD/CD Player,VCRs ,Satellite Receivers etc.) and directs them to the appropriate amplifiers.Any small error by the Preamp.,such as noise, distortion or harshness, will be multiplied when the amplifier makes a bigger copy and sends it to the speakers. Preamplifiers are the heart of the system
The Power Amplifier(s) receives the signal that is sent to it from the preamp.makes a larger copy and sends it to the speakers where it is reproduced as sound

properly, what else could you get the sound from in case you probably did no longer have a receiver? till, of direction, you recommend AMPLIFIER as an upload-on added to the receiver. Then no. you purely choose a receiver. An amp could be mandatory incredibly on condition which you had 2 zones to capacity, like an outdoors speaker set to boot to the 5.a million.
