He stares and meows at things that aren't there. He also chases imaginary things.

I don't think so.

I have an adult cat who does that- after watching her for awhile we noticed she was chasing the dust partcles you can see when the sun shines through them. She also chases midges and "invisibles" (tiny bugs).

How often do you interact with your cat and does he like to play? Playin g with cats get rid of pent up energy which can be what "chasing imaginary things" is. He could just want to play.

hmmm, that's a head scratcher. How old is your cat? If he's a kitten then I think it's pretty normal for them to play with "space" aka stuff that's not there. If he's older something could be wrong with his health, maybe he doesn't feel well and is trying to show some odd behavior to get your attention. How long has he been acting like this, is this a normal way for him to act? or is it only occasionally? If you're worried definitely take him to the vet, they might be able to help you out better and if you can't afford to just take him to the vet, call a local vet and ask them via phone. I do that when I don't want to spend the money if it's not serious, and 9 times out of 10 they'll answer questions for you over the phone and tell you if you should come in and have him looked at.

Your cat is just being a cat. They sometimes entertain themselves that way. Do you suppose he has an imaginary friend? He could also be chasing a gnat or other small bug, too. Kitty is just having fun.

I don't know how true this is, but..... I have heard that animals can see ghosts. I really don't know if I believe it to be true. I had a white cat that used to lay on the couch and look like she was watching someone or something walk bye. It was weird and I never really did pay much attention to it. I guess only he knows what he's chasing?

Don't worry, every true cat owner has asked themself this very question at least once in their life. But then we wise up and realize that cats, in general, are just weird...or that our thinking that "they" are weird is just another example of our limited experience as humans. It is difficult not to make judgments about an animal's behavior and the motivation of that behavior because our perspectives are coming from conditions that limit our insight into the animal world. -So, in other words, don't feel bad about assuming your cat has a "human" psychological condition, when in reality he is actually exemplifying typical feline behavior. We've all done it at one point or another. Just remember, don't apply human psychology to animals when looking for explanations for their behavior and its motivation. Instead, have fun watching your cat act "loony". It can be very entertaining.

Like you said it's probably the aging. You should observe your other cats and if they are doing the same thing then it is probably the aging or your cat really is crazy!

Our kitten has an invisible friend. I think it's normal for them.

If he's still a kitten, he may just be playing...
unless you have some ghosts in your house.
